Default Oil Guage....Help!

OK Last night I started my car..everything was ok..went to my mom'* house and let it sit idling about 20-25 minutes..when i came back to the car..the check guages light was on and the oil light was resting on 0.

I immediately shut her off and checked the oil..all was fine..started her up and the guage was around 40 or so..i took it for a spend around the block and it stayed around 40 and a little above..

My check Oil light did not come on just the check guages...I know it is time for an oil change but that should not have caused that problem..any thoughts?

thanks

I think Check Oil is a low-oil-level warning, not a low-oil-pressure warning. The Check Gauges light was probably covering the low oil pressure problem.

It could be that your idle is so low that an old oil pump can't put out enough pressure. I wouldn't leave the car idling that long again, that'* for sure...

You must verify the oil pressure at idle with another gauge to see if it really is that low. Maybe someone can tell us how to do that.

Was the car quite level while parked idling or was it on any slope?

I just went through an almost exact same problem with my 94 SSE.
After unsuccessfull troubleshooting by myself I ended up at the mechanics.
Well, the first diagnostic showed the sending unit as the problem so it was replaced.
No Joy. Same thing.
Tests were done to check pressure and pressure was and is good however the
gauge is still flipping out. All said and done it is determined to be the gauge itself.
An external oil gauge is about to be installed as it is way expensive to fix gauge or
replace a cluster.
Something to think about.
Hope it helps.
