Default L27, trail of coolant, empty cooling system

Got a call from my mother today, the current keeper of my '93 SE

Said she was pulling into the garage and heard a very loud gurgling sound and saw that the temp gauge was rising rapidly all of a sudden. She shut it down immediately upon hearing this. Upon inspection, the radiator had no coolant in it, or at least just the SMALLEST amount at the bottom...recovery tank way below normal. I made sure to leave a good stock of all fluids there for things like this, and so she put in a gallon of peak coolant and as soon as it settled down in the radiator, heard a dripping/leaking sound coming from under the car and saw the level dropping. The car hadn't even been started. She said the dripping was coming from about 10 inches above the ground, belt area, behind the passenger front tire. I told her thats where the water pump is located. She said that whole area is wet, so i dont know if a hose ruptured or if the water pump is leaking or something, but that doesn't sound right. I suppose it could be a heater hose or something, but I'm not there, and she has no idea what she is looking at.

Basically the problem is, I don't have the money right now to give her to have it taken in, but she said she would cover maintenance anyways....but the thing is, SHE doesn't have the money right now either.

So if someone could shed some light on this, maybe as to what the most common thing would be since I can't see it.

I wonder if there is anyone in the area up there now that is active here that could stop by and see what it actually is, gas would be covered, but of course, asking a shop to look it over, and to have it TOWED to the shop, would be insane.

Opinions on the situation might not hurt either.

most likely the water pump.. mine went pretty fast when it went too. but it wouldnt hurt to have someone check the hoses like you said... im not sure on the locations of them on the Series 1, but there is a heater hose down there on my engine.

There is no 'elbow' on a Series 1, but there is a plastic threaded and barbed STRAIGHT bypass fitting, as well as a heater bypass fitting (metal tube) with an 0-ring.

Ultimately, we can't help you until YOU get under the car and find the source. My eyeballs don't stretch that far, and there are multiple places a leak like that could come from.

i bet its that bypass that comes out of the LIM, the straight plastic piece that bill mentioned. i had 1 on each of my 92s just spontaneously break. its weird how they go.

if thats it, the replacement is in the help section and is only like $5.

wj is no fool. He knows where to look, and knows we can't help much until he tells us where it'* coming from.


(Let'* sit back and wait for more specific information from the only person that can tell us what it is, or this will go on for 2 days with guesses and bets)

There'* a specific type of post where we rely on the poster ultimately. That type of post is 'where is it coming from'.

It takes the poster to go out and tell US that, then we can lead them to a solution.

I see there is snow in the picture, so doubt I can be of help. But where is your mother and car located? Or maybe these folks already know that. I'm pretty new.

Dumping the coolant that quickly, though, w/o starting it, sounds an awful lot like a lower hose .. if I only get one vote.
