Exclamation 1993 Pontiac Bonneville not starting

I just received this car as a gift from someone I know, they took good care of it and kept up on everything. Lately been having issues where the car doesn't want to start. Yesterday I shut it off and it died on me thats when I got a jumper box to jumpstart it myself and it worked and took it to Autozone and they tested the battery and said the battery is bad, it was overcharging or something is what the employee said. We put in a new battery yesterday and after that it was working fine yesterday. Then this morning it won't start, I even have the self jumper box you can jump your car with and nothing. I try to start it and it'* just silent, maybe a couple clicks.

You may have a bad starter, alternator or solenoid grounding out. Don't trust the A/Z num-nuts diagnosis! You must have a major battery drain to cause that to happen!

I tend to agree with HotZ28 on this one. Just by what you said:

Batteries don't charge, unless they are charging a different battery that is more dead than the first battery. Alternators can overcharge (among other things) when they are broken. If your Autozone cast member says the battery is overcharging then they don't know what they are talking about. If the alternator is overcharging then they just had you feed it a new battery to overcharge and ruin.

By your current symptoms, I'd look for:

- Dead battery: A new battery can go dead too, if it isn't being charged as fast as it is supplying power. Maybe something is malfunctioning and drawing the battery down overnight. If true, whatever it is probably creates light and/or heat.
- Bad connections to battery: Check cable connections, make sure they are tight
- Bad cables: Check cables from battery to wherever they go. Sometimes they rot somewhere in the middle. If there is an excessively flexible spot, that'* probably what happened.
- Bad starter: In general, if enough voltage is getting to the starter when it is supposed to, it is probably a bad starter.

If you're going to take this on yourself, start by getting a volt meter and we can help you along the way.

Batteries are charged by the alternator and it it is overcharging you have a charging system problem and not battery. Now the battery may be bad but I suggest you take it to someone who works on them and not to the place that sells parts.

Be sure to get a "Load Test" on the battery!

A proper load test will not only check the condition of the battery; they also check the alternator.
