Fixed the stalling issue I had with the Olds by replacing the Magnavox coil with the Delco 2 set up. While test driving it after the coil swap, it threw a SES light. Turns out it'* a code for the Cam Position Sensor. Anyone know the location / replacement procedure for the Cam Position Sensor?

CPS on the 3800 is usually just to the left of the waterpump pulley. It'* screwed into the block w/ a single screw. Tragically, the sensor itself is NOT bad, but the the interrupter magnet on the cam gear has become dislodged. It'* just a small inexepensive magnet on the cam gear, but it requires that you pull the chain cover to access the magnet. This makes it a good afternoon'* work. While you are there you are usually wise to replace the chain and gears etc...

There is a way you can replace the magnet without taking off the cover, but it'* not easy and I'm concerned about the piece not staying in place in the holder. Honestly, pulling the cover is the best way.....not that hard, but you have to remove the HB to get to it and be very careful not to damage the crank sensor when taking the HB off.

Does the cam sensor ground on the ICM bracket?

No, but the cam and crank sensors both feed back to the PCM via the ICM.

I truly appreciate the info on the cam sensor and interrupter magnet. I read up on the Padgett method of JB welding the magnet in via the sensor hole, but I think I'll just pull the timing chain cover and go that route. I'll probably look at replacing the timing chain and gear and water pump while I'm at it. Is it necessary to pull the Harmonic Balancer to remove the timing chain cover?

It'* necessary to pull the HB to get at the cam sensor magnet.

The magnet goes into the cam gear from the back, IIRC. You'll have to remove the timing chain anyway...

So to make this a once and done, I'll need the interrupter magnet, a timing chain cover gasket, and a water pump and timing chain and gear while it'* apart?

Yes, all of that......but not necessarilly a water pump....BUT for what they cost and the ease of replacing them while on the bench...I'D do it just to be on the safe side.....IF your car has the motor mount in front of the water pump you have to jack the engine up a bit and remove that mount...NOT too hard, but a hassle. While you're at it you have to pull the front bolts on the oil pan.....never a bad idea to go ahead and replace the pan gasket too. The whole job can be done for just over $100.00 if you do it yourself.
