The Chronicles of OSG
Today is disassembly day #1. Going smoothly, but I have a few questions. The intake ports look weird.. they seem to have oil residue on them. The last time I pulled the intake, they looked brand new, but now they look like there was some a significant amount of oil flow. My vacuum modulator failed in a big way, and I the last time I checked the transmission fluid, I had lost a good 1.5 quarts in about 15 miles. But, this is dead black, not cherry red like transmission fluid. I inspected the intake gaskets, and I can't find a fluid trail, and although the intake gasket doesn't look all that great, it still looked acceptable. However the side intake seals both had split, and although only one appeared to be leaking, my oil level always seemed to be good. Right now, I am extremely disappointed in the quality of the GM Gaskets. My originals look better at 150k, then these gaskets at 40 miles.
In this picture, you will see some of the more caked on crap on the port, and the sludge looking stuff around the ports is just silicone I used on the install. So is the orange stuff.
This picture shows some sludge on the intake port, this is actual oil build up, not silicone. The far port looks much cleaner for some reason? Still pretty dirty though.. more than acceptable I'd think.
This is just an overall image with really poor lighting.
Here is a picture of the intake gaskets, and intake seal. You can only see one of the splits in the intake seals, but the other one looks about the same, maybe a little better looking. But they just look extremely poor.
This is the EGR hole port thingy, which is between the main intake and TB. This is where the vacuum distribution block is mounted. This is where the transmission fluid had come in through and you can see some of the red and broken up carbon build up. I'm guessing that red is what the intake ports on the heads should have looked like?
*****EDIT***** Doesn't it show I have too much time on my hands?

err.. yes? I just spread a small little layer of non-hardening gasket maker on the little beads.. i swear it was just a little itty bitty bit.. like not even measurable. The first time I did it, I lathered on the RTV, but that was a mistake, and the car was never fired with that on there. Never again, never ever again.
If I remember tonight, i'll snap a few shots of the old intake gaskets and seals. After inspecting the intake gaskets a little better, they actually look just as shitty as the originals, IIRC. Comparing pictures shall be taken. Looks like I'm going to be picking up a new set of intake gaskets and seals too

You probably can't reuse the intake gaskets anyway.
I'll have to ask my dad as to whether or not he used anything extra on the gaskets when installing. I doubt it, though.

repin: i'm not going to. After really inspecting the intake gaskets, the little bead things are ripped in some areas, and a lot of them are starting to fall apart, and the intake seals are already shot, so I would need to replace those anyways.. so I have decided to pick up a new set. I'm not going to use anything on it, unless somebody specifically says I should.
Here are a few pics comparing the original gaskets and seals to the new. Old ones are located on the left.
If you look closely, you will notice the little groove things on the new seal are all bent. Probably from the RTV, I think?
The red circles are showing where the gaskets have bent or deformed. Both new gaskets have deformed areas on the coolant ports. Only the old gasket has deformed on the intake ports.
