Default moonroof issue

I have an 89 Bonneville SSE. The moonroof doesnt open or close properly. The console on the roof where the switch is seems to be loose and when the button is pushed I get a loud grinding noise. I can make it work if I push really hard up on the console but there is much grinding and its very annoying. Was just wondering what it might be. Almost seems like something has come unwelded in there Im not sure. Any ideas guys?

Thanks

Sounds like the gears are stripped. You need to replace those. But since I don't have a moonroof, I can't help with that. However, I know a lot of other members have had the problem.. one of 'em will chime in.

well the whole console where the sunroof is is not mounted correctly it is loose.....and I have to push it up to get the moonroof to do anything. So I think it is more than just gears.

I had the same issues with my moonroof. I replaced it with a whole new assembly. Wasn't too hard, remove the glass assy, then you to drill out some rivets, slide out the moonroof. Reverse for install. I got my new roof from Webesto, the manufacturer.

Haven't had a problem since.
