Too Bored to JUST Drive
the other day, i decided to just go out for a drive, i was seriously bored. it was at night, so i noticed all of the idiot lights on the dash <oil, alt, temp, etc> then i began wondering why the temp light is on before the car is started. it will stay on too, along with all of the other lights, until the car is started. i assume its normal, but why? also, why is it when i turn the key to start, the temp gauge pegs, but none of the other gauges do, and then goes back to normal when i let off of the key. its probly normal, but why does it do it? while i was out, i went and put gas in the car. yet another question...the lowest the gauge has ever read was in the dead middle of the yellow zone, it never has read E, even when i ran the car out of gas once. then i started thinking about my high mounted brake lights never working after i even replaced the bulbs. then it was why the trunk doesnt want to stay up all the way... i could go on and on, but mainly, why does the idiot light and gauge behave the way they do

Well I can answer the idiot lights. The lights are in a "diagnostic" mode before the car is started, but while the ignition is on. They won't go out, until they have completed this "diagnostic" mode. It'* like the SES light not going out, until the car starts. The ECU hasn't completed the diagnositc procedures, which require the engine to run, to complete.

Florida has no front plate either.
Temp gauge pegging when you start is a carryover from the idiot light daze. Need to be sure it can (peg or light) to be sure it is working properly.
Newer Grand Ams are the worst I've ever seen, all the dials go to max and back when the engine starts. For someone who is hearing impaired and relies on the tach to know the engine started, this is very annoying.
