Transmission additives
Hello,
i have a 91 Bonneville with 150k on motor and tranny. The transmission has recently been having some problems. It sometimes doesnt know what gear to stay in at about 50mph, it sometimes shifts with a "clunk" noice, and sometimes hesitates to accerate.
I have seen those Transmission additves at stores such as, Slick 50, and Bars stop leak, and i was wondering if these products actually work. I realize they may only be a temporary fix, but it would be alot cheaper than rebuilding the transmission. Is there any danger of adding these additives to the tranny? they say, there save for Dextron transmissions. Any advice on these additives would help. thanks again...

Hmm, i thought Slick 50 was more of an engine additive, and stop leak is an unrecommended stop gap solution for leaks in a coolant system.
Time to have your tranny looked at, when did you last go in for tranny servicing? and check you transmission fluid, it should be a clear light red. If not....change it

I don't think the additives will hurt your tranny..... my mechanic put some in mine to help it along since I can't afford a new one (or a rebuild just yet). It'* not a cure, but it might help get a few more miles out of it.

Change Fluid?
It seems as if you recommend changing the tranny fluid and putting in a new filter. I have heard in the past that changing the transmission fluid in a transmission that has that many miles (150k) can hurt the transmission more than it is. Is there any truth to this? I honestly do not know when it was last changed, i have had it for about a year and a half and i havent changed it. However, one day the high pressure tranny lines that run to the radiator broke, while i was driving, and all the tranny fluid came out, and some into the engine compartment, I had it fixed and my mechanic put in new fluid, but i guess that isnt considered changing it. I appreciate any advice you have, thanks again....
