Rear door glass
 

re '90 Bonne SE with power windows.

Never had occasion to go into a rear door before and thought I would ask if there are any "gotcha"s as the service manual is a little vauge.

What has happened is that the glass is suddenly loose in the channel i.e. when down I could move it about several inches by hand and it needed guidance to return to the fully closed position.

Is this something common and what is the likely culprit ? (looks like the window is riveted to something called a "sash".

well i'm not too familiar with the rear windows but i'd expect them to be like the front windows.

my front window rides along two thin rails (one at front of glass, other at rear). The glass itself has 2 holes (or is it 3?) Each of these holes usually has a plastic part clipped through the hole (think of butterfly wings with pegs on the ends of em and then fold them shut (i.e. clipping to the window). The other ends of these wings are stuck into the mini rail and thats what keeps the glass inplace).

However when my front window's clip went ( i had pushed the glass some whie i was lowering it and so the plastic clip fell out of the rail) the glass fell and was sorta sitting in the door. I couldn't raise it very much.

This might be your case with the rear window. The clips are available at GM dealers for what i thought was 1 dollar a piece. When you put them in its a good idea to soak them in hot water for a bit to make the plastic a little more pliable (it comes from the dealer as butterfly wings wide open and thus it liks to come unclipped if you dont warm them up right before clipping them to your glass.)

then (by now yoru door should have the inner pannelling off so that you can access both the glass and the rail easily) you just shove the plastic clip (on the glass by now) into its respective rail, and it should be done.

Again this is IF it's your problem but it sounds like it. You'd find out when you took off the door panel and looked inside and saw the glass sorta sitting in the door

Just looked at my FSM... doesn't show exactly how many window channel guides (that's the official name they use for the butterfly plastic thing) the windows take, just tells you to install them (both front and rear windows take em).

Sounds like your guide came out of the 'sash.' Bring the window about 3/4 the way down [or wherever the window is the MOST exposed closest to the front of the car. Grab ahold of the glass in that exposed area. And Pull towards the rear of the car. You will hear a VERY obvious click.

The symptoms you describe are exactly what I had to deal with when I was trying to get the glass out. Also make sure all your weather-stripping is in good order. The glass rides in that, so that is required for proper operation.

And if you ever have to get the plastic clip for the window sash channel, please get it from the Dealership and save yourself the aggrivation.. :wink: Trust me :wink:

Will do, sounds reasonable. With glass part way down I could move the front up and down but the rear seemed to be in place which would match a bad plastic piece (anyone have a part number ?). Was able to close again by have wife move switch while I "helped" the front into place.
