I believe they do help a little, however with the basic mods most members do. You could probably get about the same power.

Yes, they do work, although I used Fastchips instead. What seems to be missing is the premium fuel and low temperature thermostat requirement for the maximum gain. The stock chip is tuned pretty well for 87 octane and little can be gained without higher octane. The approx. 10% increase in hp and torque is a little optimistic to me and my experience has been about half of that, although with a good CAI and opening up the exhaust it may be possible to get the 182 hp claim. A couple of other items that can be "impoved" at the same time is eliminating the high speed cutoff, change the coolant fan setpoint (lower) and change the lockup point for the torque converter (I found 55 mph works well) and that alone will perk up throttle response.

No way you can get 182hp from that little chip. Not with just a stock car.

I would definitely not suggest removing the high speed cutoff. You should not be in the 5800-6000RPM range on an LN3. If you are in that range, you aren't going to have that chip, because obviously you've done some extensive engine work, and should go to GM Tuners instead.

The price also is absolutely outrageous. Pheonix, if you want a custom chip, go to GM Tuners. The guy there, he'* a great guy. He will work with you, and do anything you please. He is also extremely knowledgeable with the LN3'* ECU, along with it'* parameters which give best increases, parameters not worth changing, and what gives best increases.

If your engine is limited in mods [CAI, high flow cat, tstat], a chip will only yield minimum results. 20 hp at most.. and that would probably only be achieved from extensive tuning. Remember, that gain is from the chip, not the mods. That is a separate power increase. The fuel maps and MAF capabilities will never be surpassed under natural aspiration. Never. So, really all you can play with is timing and cooling fan turn on temps. Which I would recommend getting the manual override for anyways.

OSG.. the LN3 base Hp is 160? 182 would be quite a stretch. Have you had any experience with GM Tuners personally? Sounds like a good place to start.

GM Tuners is far cheaper and I have used both. The original question was "does the chip work?" "88-'90 LN3 engine is 165hp stock, and while I do agree the claims are optimistic, 182 hp total is possible, but will need other mods in concert with the chip. By itself, the chip is good for minimal improvement. The speed limiter I mentioned, that could be eliminated, is the high speed fuel cutoff, which varies between 112-124 mph depending on the car and the O.E. tires it was equipped with. Raising the rpm limit will do essentially nothing as the engine has no real power production beyond 4500 rpm or so.

Trust me, there is no vehicle speed limiter. There is a fuel cutoff just below 6000RPM [i haven't confirmed it, but the FSM says something about it]. DO NOT remove that. That is good.

Stock hp is 165. 182 is no stretch with just a chip. It'* impossible. No way you can make a stock LN3 gain 17 hp just from that chip. The fact those figures are stretched kind of makes me doubt the credibility of the company, and what that chip really has changed [parameter wise]. If somebody knows, or feels like contacting the company that may be what to go for.

I have personal experience with talking with GM Tuners. However, I do not have a chip from them. I have exchanged many emails with him, and he knows his stuff. Trust me.

I think we generally agree, the chip alone is not good for 17 hp by itself, but it will help if tuned for premium fuel and a cooler t'stat, plus other "improvements". As far as I know there is a top speed limiter but will check with Ryan of GM Tuners. Maybe it is different on the Bonnie'*, but generaly it was limited to the speed rating of the O.E. tires. 108-112 for "*" rated tires and 120 something for "H" rated.

I heard there was no speed limiter on the older cars.ne member had his up to 220 kms or something. So this chip would allow me to get the most out of mods that you have? I didnt know they even had chips for the LN3 thats why i was suspicious.

Maybe on the speed limiter? Mine definitely had one @ 124 mph. The earlier comment about contacting GM Tuners is a good one. The price is about 25% of a Fastchips or Superchips. He has my program from my old Fastchips, optimized for 93 octane, lowered fan settings etc.. He did my turbo chip with a lot less timing and some fuel control changes as well. A good guy to work with.
