No spark on 3,6
Hi all!
I recently bought a "ready for junkyard" Bonnie -89 (SSE) and are now trying to bring it back to life
Plenty of common failures : Coilpack, Back doors, Airstruts..
Worst of them is the Engine problem. I checked coilpack and it was defect..
but after changing it there were still no spark on 3 and 6.
I checked the new coilpack and it was fine. BTW..it is a MAGNAVOX...
So i suspect faulty ICM...or can it be something else ?

If you just replaced the coil pack, yes the ICM could be the culprit. If you replaced both, you may have gotten a defective replacement. If the original ICM and/or coilpack gave spark on 3,6 then you can rule out wiring or ECU problems. If it didn't have spark on 3,6 you cannot rule out wiring or ECU problems.

Defect coil was on same 3 and 6.
But ICM controlls the coils so if other 2 coils fires so should they all? unless ICM is faulty?
I should have uppgraded to a AC DELCO ignition.. :(

The Magnavox is a single assembly that contains three electrically seperate coils. Is possible to lose just on cyl pair but have to replace the whole thing. The Delco has three individually replacable coils.

The ICM can fail on only two cylinders. It can partially fail too. I can do anything it damn well pleases, no matter how much it angers us. I have the Delco ignition.. with aftermarket coils. Well worth the $50 I spent on them all [got used stuff]. Put the old coil back on, and see if you have spark on 3 and 6. If you don't, replace ICM. If you do, get a new coilpack.

Well, I bought a FACTORY NEW ignition control module (Magnavox) and engine runs fine
...old one was too weak? in one of the control wires...
And the cost? : ICM+COILS parts only. = 570 US $.

I get these all day long at the junk yard for $20.
Well worth it to me. If one doesn't work I'll get another or exchange it.
Your fault could have been a dirty pin connector on the old one.

I cleaned both connections pretty well, but i will check that later, it could be nice to have a spare ICM.
When i checked the ICM so it gave me a signal on all wires but without ANALOG multimeter i could´t measure it. Mine digital one did not worked.
It would been cheaper for me too to buy a second hand DELCO system. But hopefully these will hold for next 16 years...
