Delco Ignition upgrade questions.
I'm sorry to be posting this topic again, especially when it has been discussed so many times.
I still have that old magnavox Ignition in the car.
I went to the yard to see if I could find some coils from a newer 92+ H body.
All I could find were the ignition for a 3100, 3300. They didn't have what appeared to be the same plug?? They didn't have one for a newer 3800.
If I find an ignition, with the mountings and whatnot, from a 92+ H body, will it plug directly into my current electrical harness? Or, am I gonna have to cut some wires, make some new connections? Or should a 3300, 3100 from a 93 and up work? They didn't have the same connectors, nor the same amount of wires.
Thanks a bunch!!

The coil packs are the same from the 3100 and other engines, but NOT the ICM. You need an ICM from a 3800 ONLY. Any 3800 ICM will plug directly into your harness. No wire cutting needed. The mounting bracket and bolts need to come from pre-95 L27 or L67 (someone verify) if you want it to bolt up perfectly.
When I did mine, I got the entire thing from a 93 Bonne...brackets, ICM and coils.

ooook, now I understand. I can get a delco ignition coil from any GM V6, but the plugs won't be the same. I just take the top, or the coil pack, off, and plug it into my existing icm.
If I however, get a 3800 from a 92 and up, it'll plug and bolt directly on.
Thanks..

The coils are nearly universal in GM vehicles. Mine were from a 3100.
The ICM must be from a Delco (type II) 3800 application.
The mounting plate (under the ICM and coils) needs to be from a Series I 3800. There was some speculation about the possibility of a 3300 bracket being the same, but I don't know.
Or... just read my writeup on the subject, complete with pictures of what you need to do.

ACTUALLY, I got my bracket from a 3.3L GA, along with the ICM and coils ( since it was sold as one unit). I have a ICM from a 96 Riviera SC and the coils from it also. When I was having a hard time starting the car after the new engine was installed along with the ignition conversion, I decided to check out the ICM from the 3.3L GA I had sitting there. It bolts up and plugs in just fine, that is what is on my car right now.
So I have the bracket from a 3.3L GA, ICM from the same car, and coils from the 96 Riviera SC( same as the 97+ SSEI) . Never did figure out that odd starting issue.

Not sure what year it is from though. All I know is that is was a 3.3L GA ( since that is what they wrote on the coils/ICM), LOL.
I am almost tempted to re-install the old magnavox system just to see how it runs, to see if I still have the same starting issue.

No mods needed. Just unbolt the whole ICm/coil assembly from a 93, 94.
Three nut on the bottom unplug and out it comes.
Simply bolt on to your braket.

Is one ICM for the single ring balancerand a second for the dual ring balancer. They have different plug keys on the harness so if it will plug in, it is the right ISM. It only handles basic timing anyway, the actual tuning of the advance is done by the ECM based on the PROM values and that is unique to the engine.
