Over the weekend, went to Pinks All Out in TN, and on the way home car just died. I was 2.5 hours from home, but luckily my sister lives about 45 minutes away.

The car had been running fine, no warning or hiccup before the problems. 1991 Buick Park Avenue w/88k miles. We were driving along and it started not wanting to take fuel. If I gave it a little, it ran fine but when I pressed the gas pedal down a little farther, it would just like loose all power. I could let off and just barely give it fuel and it was the same thing. Then it finally just died all together. It will crank & crank, but not fire. About 60lbs oil pressure, 14volts, 3/4 tank of gas when it died. We tried what we could and nothing worked. Skip ahead. I have gotten it home, and checked the fuel pressure, about 48 psi cranking. I just knew it was the fuel pump.

Now I'm lost. HELP

i had a similar problem with my 88 bonneville sse.. what you should do first is check and clean all your battery connections for corrosion (not only on the battery side) then you should clean any corrosion and apply dilectic grease. when you check the battery cables you will want to pull off the boots to find any corrosion... we get several cars a month on here with the same problems and solutions.. try this and get back to us.. if this dont help anything then it sounds like a dieing mass air flow sensor in my opinion. but i could be wrong..

to test the mass air flow sensor you will need to do this..

step 1- start the car and rev the engine to 1500 prm and leave it at 1500 rpms while you have some one unplug the clip from your mass air flof sensor. now take your foot off the gas.
step 2- close your hood and go for a 5 minute ride and see if the car drives better with the maf unpluged... if it does and it dont stall then theres your problem...

like i said it might not be your maf but that would be how you check with out going to a shop...

I will check the battery connections. The car will crank all day, but won't start. The tank is fluttering when you crank it, so if I have read correctly, the crank & cam sensor are working. Is this correct?

yes this sounds correct that they are working correctly..

another way to check if the maf is dead completly is to un clip the wire from it and unscrew the 3 screws to take it off and be carefull not to drop it at all. then once you got it out turn it upside down and see if the 2 resistors that should be there are burnt or not connected. you can tell the difference between a burnt resistor and a dirty one by gently cleaning the resistor with a q tip dippied slightly in rubbing alchol. if the black comes off then it was just dirty it it stays black then its burnt out and the maf is no good..

i doubt its your starter but when you turn the key to the on position (not run) do you hear a click from the starter..

could also be a bad ignition coil. do you no how to check those. ?

try jump starting the car it just might start and turn over i have a felling it will.......

Well..you can't rule out the cam and crank sensors. An ignition module or crank sensor would kill the motor as you mention.

You mention having good fuel pressure..but are your injectors running?

Update.

1. Checked Fuel Pressure 48-50lbs

2. Checked Plugs, pretty clean & set at .60 gap

3. Getting Spark to Plug. Installed spark tester between coil & plug wire. Getting a pretty good spark there.

4. Unplugged the Mass Air Sensor, cranked engine & no difference.

5. Unplugged crank sensor, no difference.


Just cranks & cranks, it will try to hit very rarely.

Still looking for idea'* or things to try.

No, I just tried one, but I will try them all and post back shortly.
