Oil pan capacity

Has anyone actually measured how much oil could fit into the oil pan of a 3800 motor (say from '90 or '91)?

I took mine off last week to change the gasket and I didn't have the time to see how much oil would fit up to the bottom of the windage tray.

I'm thinking that these motors would still be perfectly fine if there was a little more than the recommended amount of oil in the pan as long as it didn't get above the windage tray.

that is why there is a recommended oil capacity....why worry about adding more?

When I change my oil in the 91, I fill with a totall of 5 qts... I am usually 1 notch above the full mark..

I've been putting in 4.75 quarts with a PF52 filter and I've been right at the full mark.

If you are talking about adding extra oil, for during extreme handling, you may want to consider a different oil pan [do they even exist for our motors?], because the stocker I am sure can handle quite a bit of handling without running dry.
