I was going about 15mph behind a dumptruck and i wanted to pass him, so i stomped on the gas, it down shifted into 1st and i accelerated quickly up about 42mph, i wasnt really paying attention to anything, kinda zoned out infact, but when i realized i stopped accelerating i looked down to see that it had shifted out of first and then did its normal thing of not decideing which gear to go in. I immediately take my foot off the gas but it was too late. It revved up to about 4500, and above about 4100 i have some major valve float.

After a sec it dropped into third and i resummed my driving to my destination, this kind of thing happens everyonce and a while and im always dissappointed that it "hesitates" to shift. But then the SES popped up like a spotlight. I check the ECM, it gave me a code 41only. I reset the comp and started the engine, no SES light.....for about a sec, then it came up. I searched on the site here and read this thread, http://www.bonnevilleclub.com/forum/...hlight=code+41 and it leads me to belive that ive lost my cam magnet. I only got the "sputtering" acceleration AFTER id reset the comp though which confuses me. Before me, the engine had ran perferctly fine performance/driveability wise for about a year with a bad cam sensor. I was told the standard fix for the magnet is short of rebuilding the engine......

any comments and speculation is welcome/wanted. Looks like ill have to hold off on those killer seats on ebay right now.

Definately one step at a time, i went to the dealership to get a quote, i drove down there to talk to them in person cuz no one knew what i was talking about. They quoted me $610 out the door to redo my entire timeing chain area including the magnet. But for now, ive purchased a Cam sensor and am going to change that just on general principals, im guessing it wont remove the SES light. But thanks for the heads up Don, ill look to see if the magnet is still there.

Performance wise, if you say its the default prog running things....it sucks....ive got no vroom vroooom for now, just sputter.

Did you read the last post ? Over a year ago I replaced my magnet by removing one bolt. Is still running normally. 6007.us/cammag.htm (Note: I just changed ISPs and the redirect was not working properly before. Should be now).

I sure did ! Today i replaced the cam senor just to eliminate it off my list of suspects, even though i was sure its the magnet. I reset the ECM, started the engine, no light...for about 2 seconds....then it popped back up. So it looks like it is the magnet.

Next week my dad and i are aiming to use your "backyard" fix that you have posted. THANK YOU for sharing your cleverness with the Bonneville Community.......its things like that that make this place rock.

And if your fix doesnt work, the engine will be rebuilt. Which would be cool cuz then performance parts could be included, but would suck cuz of the money and going so long without a car

GOOD NEWZZZZZZZZZ!!!

Saturday morning i attempted the fix as described in padgett'* webpage and it worked! The fix was very smooth and straight forward. Heres what i did:
1. remove serpintine belt
2. remove water pully
3. remove cam sensor
4. crank engine till cam is in postition (on the first try thank you very much )
5. drill out and clean area
6. JB weld the magnet in

BOOM! all better

now...... the car runs much much smoother through all RPMs, but it still doesnt have the pep it used to have right off the line. Before the failure, the slightest touch of the gas pedal would result in whiplash, now it feels like i have to push down an extra half inch to get teh same results in acceleration. Is my computer still adjusting? its only been about 50 miles since the computer was reset after the fix.

A special thanks to padgett, his instructions were A+, once i got a mirror into postition, i immediately recognized the picture of the cam magnet hole looked exacted as he posted.

btw, it saved me $610 from the dealer, the same dealer where only one of the guys in the grease pits knew what a cam sensor did for a living.
