Default Air vents - '88 SSE

I have a 1988 SSE with the climate control system.

I have not owned this car long, and the air vents are a mystery to me. I can get air blowing through the vents below the windscreen but there is no air blowing out of the facia vents in the dashboard. I can't find a way of getting them to work via the HVAC controls. How does this work?

Thanks.

WIth the older ECC you have, you actually cannot select the dash vents. You have to put it on auto and wait for the car to decide that it should blow air from there. Stupid isn't it? I'm not sure when GM decided to change that.

It determines which vents based on the temperature selected. do you have the orginal users manual, it explains the [cough] stupid [barf] system in a bit more detail

thats the only thing I hate about the nicer 'villes. ECC....my olds 88 has manual selection of the vents = so much better.

Thanks guys, that explains it. It certainly does sound like a strange system!
