Default Max rpm’*, exhaust manifold gaskets, and fuel pump warrantee

Ok I have used the search and such, and I have read so many different things about the RPM’* in our cars, I would like a straight forward answer for accuracy, maybe my transmission was fixed wrong when it was rebuilt or something.

91 SSE with 133k and it shifts out when floored from first to 2nd at around 6000k and when going from 2nd to drive when she is floored it will sometimes run all the way right up to the 6500 mark. Maybe the tach is reading wrong in the higher Rpm’*. I just don’t want the motor to go bad cause of it being redlined as I have read that they are not friendly in the higher rev’*

Also on the highway when I kick it down from over drive to 2nd for passing it has a nasty ruff bump shift thing, I am sure it’* most likely a mount as my Maxima did the same when the mount went out on it. Which mount should be checked first?

Front manifold exhaust gasket is starting to leak a little, how much is a fair price to get quoted on having this fixed also?

The car is in the shop now having the fuel pump changed out, I was in shock to find out my 91 SSE was sold with a 6mo-6k guarantee that covers anything that renders the car un-drivable (I am very happy about this) plus the fact they are using the factory fuel pump and strainer kit and such. My out of pocket cost of my fuel pump being replaced is only 100.00 and I even got to take it to the shop of my choice. The car lot I bought from does the guarantee themselves when they sell the car’* so it’* not a real warrantee company doing the work.

I recall buying my old 99 SEL sentra when the car was less than 5 years old with 80k and I got a sick 3mo-3k mile service agreement with it, but it was great cause the power steering pump dropped a bolt and dropped down, which in turn dropped the belt on I-10 between Tucson and Phoenix and of course it also ran the water pump, Arizona heat before anything was noticed while driving the car went dead (heat) and the motor was fried, so they bought a new 2.0 motor for it. After that I never seen another issue with the car again, besides bad motor mount and fuel pump at 180kish

I agree with Arizona’* theory if you’re a car dealer selling a auto even used it must have a 2mo-2k guarantee, if the car is less than five years old it comes with a 3mo-3k, and less than 4 year’* is a 6mo-6k, its still not much but its better than what most states make a car dealer do and the fact it saved me buying a new motor after having my sentra for a week I was very happy especially after selling the G35 and getting the Sentra (what a downgrade that was) But overall I enjoyed the Sentra far more than I ever did the G35 as I wasn’t always worried about the car and it getting damaged and cost after the warrantee would expire on the G35.

Anyways any help with the few questions would be great, sorry so long

Oh boy this is gonna be long winded....

The transmission you have is dependant on the TV or throttle Valve cable... This cable if adjusted wrong can keep the shift points high.... Its not a good thing for the engine or the trans...

First its hard to say if the truth is being told about the RPM'*.... But in the past I have run the HOLY H E double hockey sticks out of mine... It later required me to do the heads as the valve springs were no longer happy... Yes I was abusive( still am )...

First I would like you to find out if the Tack is telling the truth...

You may also want to check or have the TV cable adjustment checked... You may have a problem with the TV cable, or the valve in the trans.... Could be a couple of diffrent things...

Here is a Vid, yes I got on it... But if you pay close attention you'll see that I got off of the happy pedal to let it shift... My TV cable is adjusted correctly... I'll edit and post another vid to show how quick mine shifts, but you'll have to listen for the shifts, and watch the speedo...

I have an intake on my 91 LE, But pay attention to how the motor sounds on the top end... When you see 6000 rpms does it scream like that or ever get to that point?

Now watch this video... Not a good view of the tach... But you can make out the speedo, and listen to the engine/exahust to change tone between shifts... Does yours shift as such?
http://media.putfile.com/Trans-shifting93

Also, these cars come out of the factory with no manifold gaskets... But If memory serves you can get a set of Fel Pro exahust manifold gaskets... I have a set on mine from the head gasket kit when I did the heads

Hey there,

Well for some unknown reason I can’t get your videos to work… but here is more on the subject

If you drive it aggressive it will shift out from 6000-6500 sometimes it’* at 6 some at 6200 some times right at 6500.

But then again my car also if driven aggressively will kick down into first until you clock 40mph. if you floor the car at 35mph it will drop into 2nd and if you don’t let off it will kick down into 1st and hold till it hits 45mph. its really odd that it would kick down at 39 when it kicks right back out at 45, but my old Trans am did the same thing as well.

The transmission was replaced with a rebuilt unit right before I got the car and it still has the gm replacement labels on it so I think its ok, maybe the tachs not telling the truth.

With all the build up from the shift points one would think that the Bonneville would be really quick, sad to say it that on my 91SSE with 134k that our 99 Sentra Gxe Limited with a automatic 1.6l that makes [email protected] and [email protected] will keep up with the Bonnie, it cant leave it but will stay very close on her trail, but then again the Sentra is one of those high revving rev happy Japanese motors that likes to be winded up (have to do that to make it drivable) redline is at 7500 in it, everywhere you read on the car’* (sentra 1.6 say’* the redlines at 6000, odd how they make the redline start at 7500 in the cars however. From factory they was said to do a 0-60 in 9.6 sec but they only weight a ounce compared to the Bonnie also

Ok, from what you are describing the Tach has to be off judging by the shift points...

But, depending on which gear ratio you have ( F79 2.97 or GX3 3.33 ) at some of those shift speeds you are overreving the engine...

Best thing you can do is get a scantool on it and see what the puter is seeing for RPM'*...

No problems with the videos here..

Try it again later and see if it works for you..

Also you need to get the TV Adjustment checked...

*chimes in* my se did the 6500 thing, i never figured out what it was but i think it really did the 6500 because of the fact that when the trans shifted that high it was one hell of a slam shift.

anyone know what controls the rev limiter in our cars?
