More fun with relays.....
Ok... so I'm adding some more interior lights to my car (neon), and I didn't want to draw the power from the dash circuit like I have in the past.
So I installed a relay under the hood and tapped into my left turn signal light. So when my nighttime lights come on, so will my interior neon.
But ... problems...
Now my DIC reports my left turn signal as beeing out.. "Check Light" is on.
I checked the light, it'* fine. I even removed the relay off of it, still a problem.
I let the car sit for a 1/2hr w/o battery, still a problem.
Any suggestions? I believe it'* a wiring issue, not a computer one (just guessing).

So the relay is gone now, and the light still works properly? Where did you tap into to get power for the neon lamps?
Try taking out the bulb, then turn on the lamps. You should get a message. Then put the bulb back in and turn on the lamps. As long as the bulb works, you shouldn't get a message anymore, unless you still have something wired up.

yeah, thats how it figures out if there is a bulb that is dead is by the conductivity of the circut. since there is so much resistance from all of the neons, that it thinks there is no conductivity. now if everything is disconnected, then then yes you should reseat the bulb, and replace if needed. in my opinion, i think you should have it independantly powered, like through the battery, and ignition, like you would with a stereo normally. also, they should be switched so you can turn them off if you need to, like on long trips when neons can get annoying. heck, throw in a variable resistor if you want. if done this way, the lights can be on all of the time, until you turn off the car, or they can be on whenever you want. might as well do it right, and do it the most effective and safest way possible. hope i didnt bore you, but thats how i would do it

Ok rjolly87... this is exactly what I want to do, maybe you can help guide me.
I currently have neons installed in the car. The are currently being power from the dash circuit. I'm adding more lights, and I think they would be too much for the dash ciruit. Thus the relay from the signal lights, since they come on at the same time my dash does.
I'm thinking now I should connect the relay to the same spot I currently am taking the power from. Also the neons already have a kill switch on them.

heres a thought. if you look at the back doors, you see the little window switch marker thing. those light up with the lights. maybe you could take those out, and power a neon on each one of those. who knows, unless you had your heart set on keeping them. i dont think that those run on the dash circut either because the gauge brightness ajuster doesnt effect them. am i wrong?

I thought about that.... but then there would be no "master" on/off switch for the neons.
I've had problems with neon'* before, and the on/off switch definately helps.
I think I'm just going to connect the relay to where I am currently getting the power for the neon'* (from my dash circuit).

i guess you would be right, unless you could find the circuit of those lights and have it switched at the dash. is it possible to line the front grill with neon, and have a neon pontiac shield in fromt. what would happen if you drew from the headlights. thats some serious power there

I've removed the extra wire as soon as I noticed the "Check Light" on the DIC. All that is left on the wire, is a little bi of soder that I used to connect the relay wire.
How exactly does the DIC know the light is out? Is there another relay further up that I may have fried when I installed mine. I was only working on the wire near the turn signal lense, and the wire just dissappears back into the engine compartment somewhere.
Any ideas? I'm the kind of person where everything has to work right.. and this is driving me crazy. I don't want to bring it to the dealer... arg.

If you're positive that there is not another lamp that is out, then try this:
The 93 has an adaptive lamp monitor. It monitors each lighting circuit by looking at voltage across internal resistors in each monitored lighting circuit. If the voltage drop decreases by a certain percentage, the monitor recognizes this as a lamp outage.
It adapts when the ignition switch is in run, and the park lamps are turned on. The module must also relearn the lighting configuration if the battery is disconnected.
Once all your wiring is set, try both of the above things.

Thanks fuddyduddy.... it'* fixed now... sort of...
Ok... here'* what I did...
I removed the blub and tried it in the other front signal light. It didn't work, but it didn't say the bulb was out on the DIC :? ... weird. I tried a new bulb in the left side, still said it was out.
So I replaced both bulbs and disconnected the battery. 15mins later I reconnected and they are both working again, AND the DIC doesn't report any errors.
On the relay/neon front, I ran another wire from the front of the dash (connected to the parking lights / dash lights) switch upto the front of the engine where I mounted the relay.... that'* the relay wire. It works perfect.
I'm so glad everything is working again, and better then before.
Thanks all
