is late shifting bad? (update)

I bought a 89 SE as a parts car to replace the tranny in my 90 SSE. The tranny in the 89 shifts ok but it shifts at around 4000 rpm as opposed to 2500 (under normal acceleration). It shifts through all the gears and the TCC works but i dont think a 4000 rpm shift is good :? My dad said that it was ok and he is a mechanic but that would kill my gas mileage. I havent checked the fluid colour yet...

same thing started happening to my 1989 SE bonnie, cept it would take about 1-2 MINUTES to shift into 2nd sometimes..

tranny was toast, and it does kill your gas mileage by the way...

I'm seriously doubting that your tranny is okay. Functioning, sure, but normally? Not at all.

The tranny doesn't seem ot hesitate, it just waits till 4000. Where is the kickdown cable? How does it adjust?

phoenix_flame220 06-16-2004 06:43 PM

oh ok quick question, isnt the kickdown cable used to adjust how much you depress the accelerator before the tranny downshits into a passing gear?

EDIT: OR, do you mean that the tranny is staying in the passing gear mode?

OK sorry I took so long. I tried that cable thing, It was a cinch to adjust. Unfortunately it didnt make much difference. It still shifts at 4000, but the downshifts are more responsive. I think that the tach may be off. When its at an idle, it reads 1200. And on an unrelated matter, after I adjusted the cabl eand drove it a bit, the engine sounds like it wants to stall at idle, and when u rev it up a bit its ok and idles high but smooth for a few seconds then starts cutting out again. any ideas?

Where would I get a scantool? And how would i reset the computer? I have no idea about the maintainace of the car, I am going to bet that the car hasnt even been washed since new :? Where is the idle air controller?

definately. Anything past 3k on an LN3 and you'll notice it without looking at the tach.
