CAI on the 87-91 w/ELC

CAI on the 87-91 w/ELC
Well as you now the ELC on this car is right in the way of doing the rice pipe, but it isn't actually too hard to get around. Just for the hell of it I bought a rice pipe kit on ebay meant for a civic.
Anyway, heres a quick step-by-step on what to do that anyone should be able to follow:
1. Disconnect accordian tube from TB and airbox.
2. Undo the four phillips screws holding the top end off the box on, and take it off.
3. Remove the snorkel by depressing the two tabs.
4. Using a couple of extensions undo the two screws holding the mounting bracket for the airbox to the frame of the car.
5. Disconnect IAT sensor.
6. Pull the airbox towards the engine until in comes off.
7. First thing that will be in your way are 3 relays that are on the same bracket as the airbox was. Unscrew the relay bracket and remount in another hole that is not going to be in the way of the pipe. You can see how I did it in the picture.
8. Asseble your rice pipe WITH the stock accordian tube.
9. Drop it in. The cone should slip right by the ELC and under the relays. Attach to the TB when your happy with the way it is sitting.
As for the IAT, remove it from the airbox and find some way to mount it in your pipe. The duct tape I used is temporary. In the near future I am going to get the K&N RX-4750 air filter, which apparantly has a good spot for mounting the IAT.
I also noticed a nice huge rust spot under the airbox that had gone right through.
I can definatly notice a power difference. It also makes this groan up and above 3000 RPM'*, and with the exhaust...it sounds feaking unbeleivable. Now about that stock accordian tube...I know it isn't good, but is it really that bad? Would it cause a noticeable power loss? Because it just worked out so good since it is the perfect length and it flexes just right for the tube to work. I know this sounds silly, but would lining it with tinfoil or something to make it straight wokr out ok? I'm just brainstorming here....

The Accordian Tube is the biggest issue [IMO] on the stock intake. It creates turbulance, which then limits flow, and makes the flow rough and whatnot [smoother = better]. I will recommend getting a new coupler.. but of course isn't necessary [but power will increase with it].
Lining it with aluminum foil [in theory] should help. Try it and see. Again, that isn't a replacement for a proper size, smooth coupler, but it is better than nothing. If you do decide to line it, line it shiney side down. It probably doesn't matter, but just humor me. Try to make it as smooth as possible, because that'* what you want.

You get to hear the intake, and the exhaust....

That is the best setup for a CAI I have seen yet on our Bonnie'* . What size pipe and couplers would I need to make my own setup like that. Where did you get your parts?

The problem is the tiny filter area I think, with the box restrictions also doing their part to slow things down. I doubt that you'd notice any real difference if you changed out the tube.
I understand the idea to line the tube with foil or something, but I don't think it would be good if the foil came lose and blocked your entire MAF screen. I wouldn't risk that, not for the tiny bit of power that you may get out of it if you're lucky.
If you wanted to get some more power (and make it look cooler), why not build an enclosure for the cone and make it a true CAI? Hot engine compartment air will rob more power than the stock tube will, I think.
Other than that, nice setup!

I just realized that about the foil...if it tore or something that would be bad news for the MAF screen, as it would get completely covered. I plan on making a heatshield soon...I am pretty good working with acrylic from my computer case modding days. I just need to get that damn K&N filter.
At WOT my car sounds pretty close to Merlins, if not the same. Your FWI setup is awesome, but at the moment I could only afford one rice pipe. I will do a driveby as soon as I find a nice spot to do it.
As for the accordian tube, Justin'* idea is the best. I'll just get another pipe (except strait) and a few couplers.
