Default Gear indicator needle.

My gear indicator needle does not work, the motor and trans are replaced. It does move a small amount, put it in drive from park and it moves between P and R. Where would I look to help solve this problem? it doesn't bother me but it would be nice to make it work again. thanks for the help

Column shift or console? Column is moved by a string and a spring, and console is operated on plastic bracketing attached to the shifter. So which you have?

It'* column shift, I figured it had the string, as we converted a friends 83 cutty from column to floor shift. just hoping I don't have to tear the instrument panel out.

IIRC, its not that bad at all. if you remove the trim panel and maybe one or possibly two more things, it should be right there. do you have an FSM or other manual? I know the FSM would give yah a full breakdown.

No manuals, looks like a possibly cluster pull? I didn't want to have to do that, but if it is necessary then while It is getting painted and interior stripped and redone, I will pull it out then.

POSSIBLY a cluster pull, but I think it can be done without goin that far.

I am going out to put my radio back in and such, I will take a look and see what I can see for that as well.

Most GM'* that I have gone at to readjust the needle on the column shifter is typically remove the lower trim panel below the steering column and look at the column for the wire, clip and screw that are supposed to hold the needle via wire to the column for movement. Readjust and put the panel back on..good as new.

If the wire is broken..you will need to fab something up for get a new piece for the cluster. At that point I could see having to pull it.

Since the needle still moves a bit, the clip should still be attached to the shifter bowl. Take out the plastic woodgrain panels on the left and right sides of the column, and then you should be able to take out the screws that hold in the trim panel under the column. Put the shifter in Neutral, and then make sure the string is wrapping around the column properly until the needle points to N. You dont have to put the shifter in Neutral, I just think it creates an easy reference point when adjusting the clip.
