heater core replacement???
 

HI again! well.. aside from my two bonnevilles.. I also have acquired my mom's 1989 olds delta 88.... pretty much the same car.. car only has 30,000 miles on it! quite the score.. only problem i noticed this morning when turning on the heater and the defroster for the front window.. the window fogged up and wouldn't clear.. and yes. i think i detect a slight smell of antifreeze.. so time for a heater core.. does anybody have any tips... instructions ... or a link to a web site somewhere with some type of instruction on how i can replace this on my own.. i've never done one. I have a basic idea but would really like some idea from someone who has done one before on steps to take.

Best advice I can offer you besides what's posted here is to buy the Chiltons #28200. Covers 86-99 H bodies. Probably the best aftermarket resource out there.

thanks for the advice about the chiltons.. i was about to go out and buy that.. but lucked out and am going one better... i called a friend of mine.. he's a gm mechanic.. he just happens to be off tomorrow and so am I.. he's coming over at 9 a.m. to help me.. or maybe i'll just help him?? heheh

Well the good side to it is that the new core is only $34! The best tip I can give you is try to not damage the hoses running from the motor to the block when taking them off, they are a bear to duplicate (trust me! real tight bends).

ok so last friday.. my friend came over and helped me replace the heater core.. ok maybe i should say i watched him replace it for me.. it's nice to watch someone else doing it when they know what they're doing. yes the hardest part was taking the hoseclamps off and disconnecting the hoses from the heater core.. the rest of it was pretty simple and from start to finish is only about an hours worth of time.. so all is well except for a bit of the antifreeze smell i'm still getting and probably will get for a little while when i turn on my heater.

lol, I was going to mention "be sure to clean out the heater case as much as possible or youll be choking on antifreeze fumes for 2 weeks" but I havent been around here in a while...oops!

The smell will eventually go away, just crank up the heat & crank the windows down for a while! :)

oh geez. yes. i cleaned it best i could.. and doing just what you said.. keep the fan motor going and the windows down. i sprayed some windex down the vents while i was doing the windows .. figured it might help dissipate some of the smell and evaporate a bit quicker which i think it helped.. I'll just contend with it til it's gone. otherwise.. job all done and went well. thanks everybody!
