Default Harmonic Balance

I need to get a new harmonic balancer for my 89 bonneville, but the problem is I have never replaced one before. I read up on it and it is supposedly connected to the crankshaft with one bolt, my question is does anyone have a picture or description of what it should look like ? Any information on the subject would be very much appreciated, thanks.

Look at the Crankshaft Pulley....The Wide thing right behind the pulley itself is the balancer. Most earlier 3800'* were press on fit, so therefore if you can loosen the bolt in the center, the pulley & balancer should slide off with your hands. If it doesn't, it may need a little "help" with a soft rubber mallet.

I got mine done for around $200 US at a dealer. You might want to get it done to avoid the hassle. And I usually like to do things myself, but it was just easiler to have them do it.

It'* because of a mechanic that I have to go back and fix this problem. It'* not going to be to much of a problem, at least I don't think. I bought a Haynes book on repair, but at what it will cost me to tow it and have it done again there is no point giving another mechanic a chance.

Anyone know what the gap is supposed to be for the pulley to crank sensor? My boss put a junkyard balancer on his 90 Bonneville, and he says it won't fire cause the gap is wrong. His Haynes manual simply says "take car to dealer for proper installation." I love when the manual cops out like that...

Thanks for any advice

Also make sure you've got the ballancer off the same year Bonneville as some later models look simular but had different Crank sensors due to GM change ups & brackets changes.

To use a puller then the Crank Sensor & it'* cover HAS TO BE REMOVED first to avoid damage. Like I said though, Series I pulleys are able to slide off by hand. The Series II'* need a puller to get them off as they're press fit instead. Now with that said, the bolt that holds the pulley on the Series I is way tighter than the Series II'* though. An Electric Impact should be able to remove it though.
