36mm, needs to be a deep socket. I just bought one yesterday at Advance. It'* actually made just for the axle nut. $20.00
Ampro# 9021124
Advance #T72004
The ball joint broke when removing the castle nut. Wasn't fun drilling out the rivets to change the ball joint. We also had to put a pipe on the ratchet to remove the 36mm nut.

BTW, my driver'* side CV joint was rusted to my hub... hammers, air chisels, and heating wouldn't cut it. PB Blaster and the air chisel knocked it out quick... and only about 3hrs on the PB. Probably coulda been done with the hammer. And my bolts came out np, and there wasn't any fighting on any bolts in my car [relatively rust free.... very limited on rear axle]. Just a side note for ya.
