Gas leaking from top of gas tank on 89 Bonne
 

I was changing the rear brake lines due to a rusted out leak and must have disturbed the gas lines right next to the brake line 3 way junction. I started the car and gas started leaking from the section of hose just rear of the gas filter and above the tank. Seems like I will need to drop the tank to see where its coming from. I believe these are high pressure lines and isn't the fuel pump in the gas tank? Has anyone experienced a leak like this?

Im sure they are different with years but possibly not the tanks setup. My SSEi was leaking from the top. I had to have the sending unit, pump, filter and lines replaced. It is a lenghtly job us take your time so you done disturb anything else. Saved about $700 by doing it myself.

Likely as mentioned it is the sending unit. I'd say you are lucky you bumped it and noticed. The rusted area could have had an issue at anytime. Fuel plus hot exhaust (nearby) are never a good mix.

Just an FYI, considering the age of your car, you will likely need new fuel tank straps and mounting bolts after taking the old ones out. They are not easily removed and sometimes need cutting.

Found out the main brake line going to the rear three way junction is a European thread with a 1/4" line. Try finding one of those at your local NAPA. Everybody stocks 3/16 European (metric) but nothing bigger. That line was rusted as well. Going to dig out my tube flaring tools and improvise. :mad:

If only you could roll the car over on its side to work on the underbody...

Had to jack the car on two wheels (passenger side front and rear) the other side were up in the air, crawl under and remove the gas tank straps, filler neck hose/gas lines etc. Luckily not too much gas in the tank. Drop the tank with a jack, drag out from under car, clean, take out sending unit. All done on a gravel driveway (ouch!). Now I have to deal with the damn gas tank plumbing. I was almost ready to call the junkman to take her away but I would not let this beast get the better of me! Its gonna run again and soon!
