Ok- So I finally got the pricing back from my friend to put an ALL NEW R134A AC system into Bonne. Im looking around $850. Has anyone else done this recently?, I think this is a good price, considering all brand new, nothing used.
I don't really want to spend this much as Im going for vacation (Bonne on vacation too )
but I can't go another summer sweating.

what exactly does that include for the price cuz thats damn high for a/c!
(a slight example, i paid 350 at a mitsu dealer to have my ac compressor replaced and the entire system flushed and charged in my old mirage)

The shop here that specializes in AC repair charges $150 to do a R134 changeover. That includes draining the old oil, vacuum, new oil and R134.
That price is for an intact, functioning system. Leaks are extra. Parts are extra.

$850 sounds kind of high, but like you said, new everything. Does that include compressor, dryer, all hoses, condenser, switches, valves and everything?
If not, you could save some money by installing yourself whatever is broken and letting a pro charge it, if you have the mechanical ability. If not, give the man his money and stay out of his way.

Yikes...He must be replacing every component on the system.

I did the conversion and spent about $600. Half of that was tools (gauge set, extra hose with R12 style fittings, vac pump, can tap) and another $190 was for a reman. compressor. The rest was chemicals, refrigerant, and the components that need replaced on every service of the AC system. (O rings, Accumulator, Orifice tube)

First, find out what is actually BROKE in your AC system. For example, if the Evap or Condensor coils are not leaking, they don't need to be replaced. Same goes for the hoses. They will need to be flushed out to remove the excess mineral oil, but otherwise if otherwise OK, leave them as-is.

Also, there'* some common sense in play..like O-Rings. No, there'* no such thing as a "R134a compatible" O-ring, so you don't have to change them. But they do take the shape of the joint over time and don't always seal again on reassembly, so it'* in your interest to change any O-ring you disturb to prevent future leaks, as well as cleaning every fitting you open up and lube them with the correct oil before reassembly.

Well Last year I put a new compressor on my white 90 and just the compressor and the receiver/dryer, and cost me close to that for just those few parts. I did the work myself. I could have gone used but I didn't. So it depends on what parts he is changing.

My friend is doing the work- he works at a GM Dealer. EVERYTHING is being replaced- compressor, evaporator, accumulator...etc My whole sysyem is shot- leaks EVERYWHERE. I have been without AC for 2 years now- the irony is when I converted the interior- it stopped working the next day. WTF Beautiful 98 interior, and no AC. I was really angry. But since I was not in Toronto at the time- I did not have the hook-ups to fix it, and thus been sweating ever since.
I'm convinced that this conversion/replacement is cheaper to do in the US. Im not sure why- but that seems to be the case. As I've read other US members posts, the parts seem to be cheaper down there.
I'd love to do this myself- but I don't have the time- and I want to make sure thats its done right. When I had the 89 I have bad memories of the compressor failing twice- smoke everywhere, resulting in tows. I don't want to go through that again.

if it includes everything then id say just go for it. thats not too bad of a price if all the parts are included.

dontcha love the amount of smoke that the compressor gives off when it fails? i smoked out the whole right lane of i94 last weekend lol

All I have to do is think of the smell- and its there-mmm got to love it!!!
and theres always the cursing afterward- like im sure you were doing on I-94, and then a few days for the burning smell to vacate the car
For a WHOLE new system I think its worth it- and condisering I plan to retire this car to weekends and summers over the next year or so- I think its a good investment.
