Exhuast work

I's time to redo the exhaust system.

Does anyone have suggestions on brands/types of Cats and Mufflers?

Anything to stay away from?

I was lookin at my Mom's 02 Maxima, and it has a strange pipe which looks like a metal braid. Is that a resonator? What does a resonator do?

GAMEOVER 12-31-2004 02:32 AM

i would go stock diameter high-flow cat and a flowmaster

opensourceguy 12-31-2004 09:02 AM

Yep.. I agree with GAMEOVER.. IMO Flowmaster sounds better than Magnaflow on our cars.

Lucky for us, we don't need a resonator, either ;). Which, is what I think you are seeing. A resonator quiets the exhaust further. Don't worry about it though.. our engines aren't as loud as theirs.

You guys obviously don't remember the Magnaflow on Jim's car. That was probably the best sounding exhaust I've ever heard on an 87-91 3800. Bar none. The clip is posted here somewhere. Maybe on BonneMe's site.

sse1990 12-31-2004 10:12 AM

I agree with Will on this one. I put a magnaflow on my 90 SSE and believe it or not it sounds better than Jim's car for some reason. I have also heard the magnaflow on Jim's Whorera, I mean Aurora, and it sounds amazing, trust me I gave that car a good workout. Plus I have heard the magnaflow on a Malibu with the 3.1 in it and it sounded very close to the Bonneville's sound, ask Jim he was there too.

I have an audio clip of the Bonneville but only of slow takeoff so you don't really hear the true sound. Here is the post I made on OBC http://www.ontariobonnevilleclub.com...topic.php?t=83

This gives you an idea what it sounds like at idle and slow takeoff, just have a eye on the second vid for how far the car is in the distance and you can still hear it. It is a NICE low deep sound, unlike the flowmaster.

opensourceguy 12-31-2004 10:25 AM

I heard every sound clip I could find. And Merlin 91/97's 91.. holy crap I have that movie saved on my pc.. and I tend to listen to it every so often, to dream of what my car may sound like, one day. That exhaust owns all.

sse1990 12-31-2004 10:29 AM

One thing to remember, I was there when the sound clip for Jim's car was made and it sounds a good bit different(worse) once it is on the pc than being there. So unless you can actually stand next to the cars and compare it will be tough. If I am not mistaken when the sound clip for Jim's car was taken we had a stock, vs flowmaster, vs magnaflow. Jim will have to remind me or not. And with all the crowd of people there we all decided that the magnaflow sounded better on Jim's car.

then again its all personal peference
personaly i dont like magnaflow on a V6

willwren 12-31-2004 01:30 PM

There's alot of variables playing here, but I'll add a couple points. I'll agree with Mike 100% that video or recorded audio is an AID to choosing an exhaust, but it really doesn't represent the true sound.

Other variables that come into play are simply the manufacturer of the cat and/or resonator. Alot of people liked my Magnaflow setup before the resonator, but EVERYONE loves it now that the res is installed. We had the opportunity to compare mine to john's Flowmaster at WCBF, both before and after the Res.

repinS 12-31-2004 02:32 PM

My exhaust sound seems to be unique, as the cool (IMO) sound comes not from any grumble or engine noise, but from resonance. Unfortunately, this resonance doesn't linger around past 3000rpm.

Idling (Right-Click, Save Target As), 2.26MB
I've yet to get action shots, but here, have some fast idle http://members.rogers.com/repins/emoticons/tongue.gif

GAMEOVER 12-31-2004 03:09 PM

and yet agian its all personal perference
what sound does the owner what to acheive out of his car?

best bet is sound clips and he can go from there

theJMFC 01-01-2005 02:45 AM

I know that it's not really relevant, but the braided-looking pipe mentioned in the first post would be a flex-pipe of some sort, right? Not a resonator. I know I've seen such braided pipes used as flex-pipes on some imports and a ford contour.

Sorry, I just can't let stuff like that go...

repinS 01-02-2005 12:31 PM

Here, got somewhat of an action shot, I just got up and realized my dad was going out, so it was quite hasty:

Drive sounds: Right-Click, Save Target As (1.92MB)

(it's bone stock piping/muffler)

Awesome! Mine sounds EXACTLY like that when I'm idling, I thought it was kind of cool too. I don't know what causes it to sound like that, but I'm thinking theres a leak somewhere in my exhaust system. I'll try and make a sound clip when it's nicer out. (We just got close to 40cm of snow in the past 2 days, I just finished digging the car out. )

repinS 01-02-2005 06:11 PM

Interesting, I've never heard another Bonneville sound quite like mine, might be in my head. Not the neighbour's '87, not any other pre-91 3800, not alex_r357's '89 SE, nothing.

edit: might I add, I was behind a two-paned window when I shot the video, so the volume was probably considerably dampened

opensourceguy 01-02-2005 08:08 PM

SSE's have the N10 Muffler, so comparing with anything other than that, is going to differ. Mine sounds fairly similar. If you have someone rev the engine, and you are standing by your muffler, can you hear a little bit of a cackle on the deleceration? N10 has dual tips, btw.

-justin

repinS 01-02-2005 08:24 PM

I have the single-outlet, dual-tipped muffler, different from yours, IIRC.

opensourceguy 01-02-2005 09:27 PM

No, we have the same. I just think maybe captainmiller is right, in that you may have an exhaust leak, because I don't think mine is quite that loud. Mind you, it's been a while since my car has run :(. I miss that beautiful sound.

-justin

repinS 01-02-2005 09:40 PM

The last exhaust leak (to my knowledge, anyway, as far as I know, my system is solid) I had was between the downpipe and cat (IIRC) this past summer, and the car REALLY sounded different. That's been fixed.

BonneMeMN 01-03-2005 12:16 AM

Those clips are a lot like my stocker. Not a bad sound at all, just kinda quiet. For the price i got mine for, the dual look, and volume are a great deal. Catalytic converters can be plugged more then others making them quieter, etc. Outside air temperature closed/open loop also effect this.

captainmiller 01-03-2005 01:06 AM

Well, I can almost be sure I have an exhaust leak. The car sat for four years with no care whatsoever, so I'm sure something must have rusted through. I also have the single outlet dual tipped muffler.

I swear, it sounds just like mine. Hopefully by tomorrow I can have a vid up. :D

KEOTOK 01-03-2005 02:20 PM

Who knows the sizes and suches?

Any part numbers?

Neither company has a bolt in so I guess we have to customize it hunh?

sse1990 01-03-2005 02:44 PM

I used the Magnaflow muffler designed for the camero's which gives me the single in and dual out ( one out on each side) unlike my OEM dual which had both outs on the same side. There is plenty of room for them too.
I am not sure what the part number was, I just went to the shop and asked them to order a magnaflow muffle for the late model camero's.

opensourceguy 01-03-2005 02:58 PM

Any F-Body ;).

Right click, save target as.

http://members.shaw.ca/bonneville01/Bonneville1st.AVI - Faster Idle, 4mb
http://members.shaw.ca/bonneville01/Bonneville3rd.AVI - Slower Idle, 3.5mb

Had to do it quick, it was -15F out when I did that. It really sounds the same towards the end of the first video when I put it closer to the muffler. I'm sure if it weren't for having different recording devices they would sound identical. It just seems mine is a little bassier. I think it sounds pretty cool, considering everything is stock.

Now...I'll stop interupting your thread.

repinS 01-03-2005 08:39 PM

Still sounds different from mine fast idling, what you hear in my vid on page 1 is what you get.

Mind you, I have an unknown catalytic converter from a random car. It gives the car like-new emissions, that's all I can say

LakevilleSSEi 01-03-2005 09:21 PM

I'm really happy with my Flowmaster 80 series....Best 60 bux I ever spent....Nice rumble.......Sounds like she mean's buisness on the light...

alec_b 01-05-2005 11:48 AM

These are great links guys. I just joined your site as i have recently aquired a 1987 white bonneville LE. 204,000 miles, no hub caps, typical rust at the rocker panels, but like we all know runs PERFECT. I live in minesota, and you all may be jealous of this, but because by the grace of jesse the body ventura being govorner for a short time, we have NO EMISSIONS TESTING! So my car has the old stock cat removed and replaced with a piece of straight pipe. Boy did that liven up the motor now that it can actually breathe. But besides that, i have the stock single in, dual out (to one side only) muffler and i was looking to upgrade it. I really like the sound of the magnaflows, and i was just wondering if it will bolt right in place of the stock or if a little fab'ing and fitting are required. Welding is no prob as i can do that myself. Thanks guys.

KEOTOK 01-10-2005 11:04 PM

Anyone know the pipe size for the exhaust pipes?

Going into the Cat outta the cat and the same for the muffler.

KEOTOK 02-11-2005 09:36 AM

I chatted with a performance shop. He wants to use larger sized pipes. 3" from the factory 2.25". I'm kinda hesitant on this. He seemed to think because of the Cat that going to a bigger pipe wont affect backpressure enough. What'd you guys think?

I also want to put a supercharged engine in this in the near future. Does anyone know if the pipes are larger?

opensourceguy 02-11-2005 03:03 PM

3" is WAAAY too large for our cars. 3" is too large for some of the 12ers here.. so don't even THINK of putting a 3" exhaust on your's. 2.5" for the 92+ S/C's.

-justin

repinS 02-11-2005 03:04 PM

yer, unless you've got a turbocharger, you don't really want a 3" setup, it's a bit big.

KEOTOK 02-12-2005 03:03 PM

yeah, I'm going with you guys. I think 2.5 should be big enough.

Thanks

LakevilleSSEi 02-12-2005 04:20 PM

If you had S/C with a smaller pulley than 2.5". You wouldn't benefit from a 3" exhaust. I'm think of going to 3" when I get my rockers done, and some other mod's done so i can go even smaller.
