Coolant leak
 

I have a coolant leak and just happened out of nowhere last week. It's just a slow drip that takes a couple days to empty the thank.

it drips not far from the side of the oil filter toward the driver's side. My initial thought was that it was the resivour, but I felt under it, and didn't feel wet anywhere. I'm not 100% sure though.

any ideas?

Check the coolant bypass hose coming out of the top of the WP where it goes into the intake manifold, and check the WP weep hole. With the air movement in the engine while driving, it's hard to nail it down sometimes.

what's WP stand for?

also, I hear what think are Belt noises...kind of like when your powersteering goes bad.

it start last week the day before I notied my coolant was out.

The belt noises are from water on the belts.

WP means Water Pump.

well, I'm not very experienced when it comes to cars, so bare with me here.


I've narrowed down the leak a little better. I assume you guys are right, it's coming from near the firewall in the back passenger side under the silver cylinder with metal lines which I assume is the WP.

I could only look from the top because every time I was check was after driving the car and it was dripping pretty heavy.

What are the Weep holes?

Near the firewall? Ok. The water pump is on the engine. Mounted directly to it, and driven by a pulley. It's the think right in the middle, driven by the BACK (flat side) of the belt. Sounds like your leak is a heater hose where it goes through the firewall to the heater core. That silver thing you describe sounds like part of your AC ;) Can you narrow it down with my signature picture?

Yeah, the silver thing on the left side of the pic under the strut bar with the metal "hose" going towards the front of the engine. In my '90 the Collant Resivour is right there beside the Washer fluid.

Ok. You have a heater core/heater hose leak near the firewall. Is it the hose, or the core? Or is the coolant blowing back there while you drive?

well, I've parked the car in the street for the last couple weeks and have been driving my other car.

I went out to check things again, and now it seems to be dripping right under the belts on the passanger side of the engine. I crawled under there. I guess I was thrown off before because I had the car on ramps.

It's beading up and dripping right under the belts about 5 inches away from the oil drain if that helps. the oil pan and part this is dripping from are not connected, that's just for reference.

I thought it might be around the belts because they've been making some nasty noises the same time this all started.


any more ideas? I need to get this fixed by friday so my sister can use the car. I'll be taking it to a shop regardless, but I'd like a good guess to tell them.

probably the WP like you all said earlier :P

Now I'd guess water pump. Especially with the related noise. Pull the accessory belt and turn the WP by hand. And check for coolant directly beneath the pump.

It's still hard to say for sure without looking at the car personally. If it is the water pump, and you need the car that soon, you better get busy.
