Code 34
Hi Guys,
This morning started the 1990 Bonneville and the engine light came on, ran rough and stalled several times. I checked the codes and got a code 34, which appears to be the mass air flow sensor. I turned the car off and started again, seemed to run smooth again, no service engine light. Should I replace the MAF? or is there some thing else I should try first. If so where can I get one reasonably priced. The car is in good shape, 225,000 KM and normally engine runs very well until today. Thanks, |
Been there done that.
Usually the code means they are dead, but there is a small chance that its just REALLY dirty. I'm thinking since you said its intermittent, it might just be that. So, go to your local parts store and get some MAF sensor cleaner. Don't use anything BUT that. Clean it up and reinstall. If it still gives you that, they are VERY expensive, so I would recommend getting one from a salvage yard. I got mine from my local yard 30,000 miles ago and still going strong. Oh and be sure to clean that one from the yard too. ;) |
If it were me, I would take it out and look at it. If the little wires are broken, you need a new one.

Thanks for the reply.
I will give that a try. Brewski1 |

Clean the sensor as per tech info.... Search will work for you.. Also while the car is idling, give the MAF a tap with a screwdriver and see if the idle changes... And yes a code 34 will usually end up with a replacement MAF __________________ Best Car Insurance | Auto Protection Today | FREE Trade-In Quote |
True, but if the little wires are broken, it isn't going to work and there's not much point in cleaning it.
Like I said, that would be the first thing I'd check. |

Like I said, that would be the first thing I'd check. But yes I agree, if the filaments are broken its time for a new MAF ;) __________________ Best Car Insurance | Auto Protection Today | FREE Trade-In Quote |
But if the filament(s) were broken, the CEL would be illuminated constantly, which isn't the case.
Clean the sensor and the connector contacts. See where that gets you. TB/MAF cleaning is in Techinfo, link at the top of the page as already mentioned. |
