Default Upgrade to delco ignition.

Is there anything special i need to do for this? Or is it just swap my old Magnavox with the new delco module and everything and it all bolts up. It'* the one that'* mounted on the rear of the engine. So if i could get the info that'd be great.

I'm curious as well, as my neighbour is in need of a coil/ICM; he'* got a nagging miss at idle and just above...

Probably should mention that all of my work was with "C" Magnavox and "L" Delco ignitions. If you have a 1987 it probably is a "3" and has the single ring crank sensor and not the dual ring.

There is a Delco that will swap but it is for a GN and not the later one.

oh my no. You gotta get the delco ignition from an LG3. Not from any other car. It won't work.

So really, what we're all trying to say is this:

Yes you can do this, but you need to get the parts off of the right car. Any of the Delco coils will work fine, but you need the correct ICM (ignition control module). On the newer 3800 engines, the ignition is mounted in the front, near the accessory belt. Those ICM'* won't work for you. All you've got to do is find a Delco style ignition mounted in the back, like your Magnavox, on a FWD GM 3.8, and you should be golden. There is some possibility that a unit from a 3300 (grand am, other cars) might work, but I don't know if anybody has really tried it. To be safe, get one from the 3.8.

As Padgett mentioned, the some Buick GN'* also had this same ignition that you want. Good luck finding a GN in a yard though...

Because these engines were only made for a few years, junkyard parts may be hard to come by. Good luck.

Well maybe i can try and get to a yard. I've only ever seen one Delco on a car like mine, but it was an olds 88. So they can't be really common,

I don't know about that. I think I've seen more Delco than Magnavox on those cars, at least in the yards up here. It may take a yard or two, but you should be able to find one.

And remember, it doesn't matter how bad the coils are. All you really need from that car is the ICM. Coils can be from anything really. Mine were off of a 3.1 in a Lumina. The only thing is, you'll not necessarily be able to trust the white numbers on the coils if they're from another car. Go by your haynes or chiltons manual when you hook up your plug wires.

JMFC is incredibly correct.

I too have seen more delco ignitions on the LG3 than magnavox'*. Hell, I don't think I have ever seen a magnavox on the LG3. You have been the first case, my friend.

As far as the coils go, again, any delco coils will work. BUT remember that in 1997, the supercharged 3800 got better coils. They are believed to be the same spark energy as the aftermarket MSD coils [better than stock]. So you may want to look around for some coils from a 97+ SSEi. Or PA Ultra.

Although I am sure Alec knows it, I am just putting the info out for anyone who doesn't. The cylinder sequence is like so, 3 6 2 5 4 1. 1 being closest to the driver'* side. And the engine'* cylinders are like so,

2 4 6
1 3 5 [this is the same for ALL 3800s. LG3 - S3 L67].

Well maybe when i actually get some money i'll go look for one. Wouldn't u just know i'm the one that gets stuck with the magnavox ignition. I must have an early '87 model.
