A/C Compressor Question
Hey guys....once again I need help. Installed a new water pump today as the old one was thought to be ticking and the bearing finally let go last night on the way home. GO GO bonneville....I made it home on battery which is a 20 min drive. After changing the water pump I thought it would solve the loud tick I was having at idle. Come to find out the A/C compressor is making the loud ticking sound ....I was wondering if there is a kit to rebuild it or if it has to be replaced and if so how much roughly are we talking about for either part? Any help would be great guys :D Other than that the bonneville is wonderful.......It eats rice burners up and spits em out the tailpipe MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! :D

Dottie, is it a random ticking, or a constant one?
The answer is no, you can't rebuild it yourself. Take it to a pro. There's hazardous gunk in there, as well as alot of oil. |

Depends on the problem. If it is the pulley/clutch/bearing making the noise (and ticking with the a/c off is likely that), that is a simple job to replace in the car with a $40 NAPA tool. If it is eating Freon or blowing hot at idle (leaking seals) then it needs replaced.
To replace a compressor you also need to replace the accumulator and I would replace the oriface tube as well. Going that far I would convert to R-134A. Be very careful of the manifold while changing, is easy to crack. Because of the difficulty and other pieces that are needed when replacing a compressor, I would only go with a new Delco (Delphi) unit, a reman'd compressor's warrenty only covers the compressor and not everything else you need to do. OTOH a used clutch/bearing would not bother me at all since easy to do (why I ask to keep the old compressor when replacing one). |
it is a constant ticking and it is VERY loud at idle.....and as far as the refrigerant is conserned....its been empty for some time....so your saying about 400$ Cdn??? or is that american to replace it and what does the 400$ include?
