Default Bad Harmonic Balancer?

Ok...

So Black Magic, the 91, has been sitting for 8 months.
I took her out last Friday, she was fine. I've driven her around a bit this week w/o problems.

Then I drop her off to be re-tinted today, (going from 35% to 15%), and I hear this god awful rattling coming from the front. Only around 1000rpm.... when I rev her it goes away.

It sounds like it'* coming from the bottom thing that the belt connects to... like it'* whacking on something as the belt spins. The guy at the auto glass says he had the same problem and it was the "Harmonic Balancer".

Does this sound right? Any idea what this repair costs?

To see if the HB is bad reach down there and feel the end of it. Between the belt and the center bolt is rubber. The rubber should be solid. If it feels weak or has cracks in it is is bad. BTW if you need a HB, I have one off my 88 that is still good. It was only on my car for about 5000 miles before it stopped running. PM me if you are interested.

The guy at the shop said it was off his 88.... he wasn't sure but said it ran him $200-$500 bills..... Cdn.... that'* including the repair cost. But he also said he had taken the car to 1/2 a dozen shops before they fixed it right, so he might have been adding them up.

Yea I'm interested in that... I'm going to wait until my mechanic checks it out, and then price a part... and then go from there.... but thanks for the info... I really do appricate it....

Well I reached down in the engine to feel how the rubber was.... but I couldn't find any rubber.

So I was kinda confused...

Anyways, I'm storing the car in my folks driveway, until I get another parking spot at the apartment. So I told dad the problem I was having, but how I couldn't find the rubber thing people were talking about.

We pop the hood and he trys to find it... no luck... weird eh.
Then he says "wait a second"... he goes in the garage, and pulls out this softball size piece of rubber that'* like a cone.... he said he found it in the backyard yesterday... on the grass... which is the route I would have had to drive the car out from the basket ball court.

Mystery solved.... I'll post a pic if I get a chance.

Thanx for the info about the aftermarket balancer.... btw.

If the balancer disintegrated, the serpentine belt would be waving in the breeze. Balancer is on the end of the crank and the belt loops around it. Rubber center is very hard and will not feel like a hose or tire.

I'll try and get a pic of it later tonight or tomorrow.
(the black rubber piece that is)

Right now the 91 is in the shop for lots of repairs... largest of which is the tranny.
Hopefully I'll get her back soon... and the bill won't be too bad.... :(
