Default new member / spark plug wire question

hi all! I'm a new member here, my father-in-law just gave me his 89 LE to use as a winter car

It runs great except for occasional stumbling on acceleration ... happens especially when it'* humid...

I figure changing spark plug wires is a good start. But the wires for the front bank are clipped into a plastic shroud. I tried to open / remove it but I can't see how without breaking something. It'* wedged between the dipstick and valve cover. OK, what'* the trick? I tried searching but didn't find anything

Also - do I really have to pull the alternator to change the rear bank wires? I guess I've been spoiled by the 5-minute plug wire changes on Hondas hahaha

BTW, great site! Lots of useful info here. TIA

I think you're referring to the heat shield that the wires go thru at the front of the engine. I'm not by my car now but they have these tabs that you pry on under the valve cover to open up the heat shield to get the wires in/out. You don't have to "pull" the alternator to get to change the rear bank of wires. I'm sure you know to remove the cover that clips onto the fuel rail. You should have enough room to maneuver to get the wires to the rear. Don't forget to clip the wires into the wire looms. Let us know how it goes.

And Welcome to The Club. I gues you're the Blacksheep of our family!
