Default Tranny question

I noticed over the last few months that the tranny in my '91 would not go into OD every now and then until it was fully warmed up.

This morning (probably the coldest morning since I noticed the OD thing), it first refused to shift out of 1st for the first mile of driving and then it eventually went into 2nd, but then it refused to go into 3rd for a little while. Then, it would not go into OD for a few miles (just like in the past). After about 10 miles of driving, the tranny started working totally normal.

The tranny has about 75k miles on it. I'm at work right now, so I have not yet been able to diagnose the obvious things.

Ok..let'* start off easy.

When was the last time (if ever) the transmission fluid and filter was changed?
This problem only occurs when the transmission is cold?

The fluid and filter were last changed about 20k miles ago.

The problem has only occurred until the car was driven at most 10 highway miles, so I am assuming that the fluid was hot by then. What happened this morning with the 1-2 and 2-3 upshifts lasted only a couple of miles. I only had the OD issue by the time I got on the highway.

Start off by checking the fluid level and how it looks.

On a 00 pickup i have the computer delays shifiting points to help the motor heat up, but I doubt they had that on this gen bonne. Still..trans shifting is controlled by the computer.

Just walked outside to check the fluid and it'* full. It doesn't smell burnt and the color looks normal for used tranny fluid.

Are you sure that the shifting is controlled by the computer in this case? The tranny has a TV cable and the only electrical connections that I can see are two wires to a black round plug on the side of the tranny facing the radiator. I don't have my shop manual here, so I don't know what that is.

From the driverside strut tower follow the shifter cable down to the tranny. Now look about within a 6 inch radius from it.. You should see a connector with more wires.

But no..I'm not 100% I'm going off what I know of a 90

Nope. Definitely no connectors around the shifter cable area.

I was wrong about that connector on the front of the tranny. It'* a 5 wire connector. At a quick glance, I didn't see all the wires underneath the top 2.

I just tried adjusting the TV cable at the TB and it pretty much clicked back to where it was before.

I guess that I wouldn't mind changing the tranny fluid and filter again. Any recommendations on additives?

I guess that I'll take a ride to the local Pep Boys or Autozone on my lunch break to see what additives they have. Most of the miles on this tranny are highway miles, so it would seem like it'* a little soon for a rebuild.

If you take away the cold temp issues, the tranny upshifts and downshifts perfectly and reverse works just fine. :?
