can i replace the master cylinder w/abs on my 88 sse myself?
hi everyone. latley my master cyliner starting leaking brake fluid from my compression valve when ever i step on the brakes. and thed dealer wanted $1000 just for the compression valve itself. i use a website called nationwideautoparts.com to get everything i need that i cant find or wont take a chance gettin at a yard. i paid $170 shipped to my door for the whole entire unit...
now is this something i can change myself or should i pay my mechanic $100 he wants to do the swap.. i never done something like this before. just pads calipers and rotors is all i messed with with my brakes so far. i do have the original 88 sse chilton manual. thanks guys..

ABS
You have the Teves system and it is quite combersom to change from the looks of it although I have never done it as my 90 SSE has the original unit. I just change the fluid now and then.
Maybe someone who has done it will chime in.

Not familiar with compression valve, but you should be able to change the master cylinder without disturbing the ABS. If the ABS is the problem, I think Don has changed his out. http://www.bonnevilleclub.com/forum/...ic.php?t=75394

Its fairly easy to replace the abs unit on the 88-90s. 4 bolts above the brake pedal, 3 brake lines, and a couple electrical connectors and its off.

DarkShadow is right, I have replaced my MS as a whole with a j/y find, and it was quite easy, it took a few hours, and the right size line wrenches (3 different sizes... don't remember what they were) one of them was hard to take off of the old unit, without damaging the nuts, and getting the pedal plunger to pop out was interesting too.
But, all in all, it wasn't too bad..

thanks
thanks huys.. o.k here is what i did .. i was loosing a bottle of fluid every 2 days so i went to a yard and pulled one out with your help but here is the catch. (theres always a catch) my hydraulic brake unit had a high pressure hose and the one i pulled had a metal hose that ran from the master cylinder to the pump. now i did not no if it made a difference so i installed it anyway. it seems to be working fine. actually a lil too fine.. all i have to do is slightly press the brakes and wow im already at a full easy stop...... is this normal.. it feels like if i really step on the brake with pressure my tires will lock right up and skid.... meaning they feel very strong.. a lil too strong compared to my last unit..? any ideas

your old setup was weak? I can lock mine up on a dime if needed, I berely push the breaks and stop easily, I did jam on them really hard one day and DARN no wonder they used to put teeves in cadillacs
