My code 3-3.8 has developed a nasty problem. It intermittantly stalls and/or runs extremely rough. Worse when cold, but even after hours on the freeway it will burp at times in the city. Codes 32 and 34 on the dash light. I have eliminated the EGR and EVRV and clamped the EGR valve so it can't float. I don't think I have a MAP sensor on mine so I can't evaluate code 34. Brake pedal goes hard when stumbling even though still running, so vacuum is affected by problem. Accompanied by black smoke and unburnt fuel from exhaust. Replaced PCV valve. I did notice that the vanes on the damper appear to have been contacting the crank position sensor. Any ideas?

Lots, that is the problem. Stumbling, stalling, and smoke often indicate a waaay over rich condition. Code 34 is the Mass Airflow Sensor ona "C" engine (black square thingie with three screws on side of throttle body.

Since MAF is a major contributer to the mixture setting, that would be a good place to start. When you pull it out there are two coils of wire visible. The MAF is very expensive and the coils are delicate.

Personally I'd use a scan tool to take a snapshot when the problem occurs but first you might just R&R the MAF connector a few times, it might just be a bad connection.

Thanks for the pointers on the MAF-I didn't see that in the code list before. Dang thing ran great tonight. Aside from the MAF, could this be an IAC problem?

I guess I will have to suffer with this until I have the time and $ to replace the suggested items. Tonight when I left work, it ran well until I hit the highway and accelerated. It uncharateristically crapped out at this point and I struggled with it for about 10 minutes until things really warmed up. I consider myself a decent mechanic, and have corrected a number of faults during this process. I wish I had access to a scanner device, but failing that, I will start replacing parts as I can. I tried to borrow a MAF from a mechanic friend of mine today, but he didn't have the right one. I idled the vehicle fro about 10 mins before leaving work and had no trouble with stalling, but surprisingly, the guage came up higher than it has for weeks. I have done some coooling system work ie: replaced the little hoses under the throttle body, but that was some time ago. I wonder if they might be kinked and the TB is freezing up? Bit of a stab in the dark but who knows. RF brake caliper seized up today. Maybe I should use this car for parts! Will disconn batt tomorrow and look for new codes. Thanks.

Replaced the MAF and life is good once more-will hold off on the large explosion and fiery inferno til another day! Our big parts supplier here in BC said the part was obsolete and was special order only (checked with two outlets), thank goodness NAPA has decided to come in and "kick their butts"-they had it on the shelf. BTW, cost me $165 CAD. A bit high for a reman, but I don't have the choices you guys have. Thanks for all your help!

Really nothing to look at, just a daily driver. I really do enjoy it though. I will surely post more topics as I work out the bugs.
