code 42
my bonneville (1990 bone stocker) has been diying when im doing 55 with the cruise set and the gages all drop to zero and bounce right back up it finally gave me a code 42 (42 The EST signal did not change when the ECM applied bypass voltage to the ignition module.)
and i have no idea what the EST is and i need to know so i can fix it its a really annoying problem thanks for any input

Electronic Spark Timing but just going to take a wild guess and suggest that what you describe (everything dying) sounds more like a bad ignition switch (do headlights go off also or do they stay on ?)
Is that a stock color ? Looks better than many.

That means the ECU isn't taking over the timing. If you are going down the highway and this is happening, chances are it is a loose connection on the ICM Harness. Make sure that is tight [7mm bolt, I think.. or maybe 7/32]. Disconnect the battery for ~30 minutes, and make sure you only get a code 12 before starting the car. Drive around a little, and again confirm that you are codeless. Chances are it was just a freak happening.
Padgett: Where do you get that the Ignition Switch failed? I'm just curious because I am going through a Code 42 myself.. and nothing I have read describes anything like that.

Ignition switch suggestion came from the first post where the engine stops, all of the guages go ded, and everything turns off momentarily. Suspect the code 42 may be "collateral damage". Other possibility is a massive short but suspect something would be burning.
BTW disconnecting the battery for 30 seconds is usually enough.

Actually, he didn't say anything about the engine dying. Just that all of the gauges go dead. But I guess we can assume that the engine died?
Yeah, they usually do, but that'* not everytime. And I would rather be safe than sorry. If it were me, I pull it for a minute or two and throw it back on. But what if that didn't really clear it? Then we could be giving someone bad advice. Possibly that the ECU has failed, or whatever it may be.

On my 91, when the module was going out, the tach would drop like a rock and then all of the sudden come back to life( Engine did the same ) no codes...
In the 95 when the PCM bit the dust, all the gages would shut off, then a few seconds later come back.... At times when this would happen the engine would have flat or dead spots... And at standstill idle the engine would just shut off... I could hear the fuel pump stop then the engine would die while idling...
But there is also a small possibility that the ignition switch can go bad and cause a loty of these issues.... Seen this problem on various N bodies and Some hondas...
Seems like the Module or ECM is having a fit...
Check all connection.... Disconnect the battery for a minute, then hook up the cable again, and recheck for codes( engine off ) make sure the code don't reappear... Start the car and see if the code 42 returns...

No ? "has been diying when im doing 55 with the cruise set and the gages all drop to zero ". If the speedo and oil pressure drop to zero, that is a power failure. Could be ECM but the engine is dying also so would need to be multiple circuits
I suspect it is also dropping the cruise as well. If headlights stay on then it is confined to the "Hot in Run" circuit Only place all of these things come together is the ignition switch (or power feed to the ignition switch hence my suggestion SWAG to check there.
