Default Got a Code 42 please help.

1989 Bonneville LE 3.8L Vin C

Alright got a code 42 so I changed the plugs and wires. No difference. Then the car started running worse so I changed the coils and ICM. Still no change so I went with the MAF. It runs better now so i reset the computer to remove the codes. Then after about 30 miles of driving code 42 again. Im at a loss please help.

In the Chilton it says code 42 is ignition control circuit. The book that came with my code reader says that there are three possible things:

- Electronic spark timing circuit - open or shorted
- Direct ignition system fault - bypass circuit open or shorted to ground during engine run
- Fuel cutoff relay circuit - open or shorted to ground

So....lets see if this is a hard code set or transitory. Disconnect your (-) battery terminal for 1 minute or more and then reconnect. Start the car and take it for a spin. If the SES light comes back on, then you need to make the repairs. I was able to find some info on-line that might be of help.

--------
FIX for GM obd1 with code 42:
Remove the distributor assembly and replace the following:
Pick up coil
Ignition module

Once the above parts are replaced, reset the code and go for a quick road test to confirm. If your engine does not have a distributor, replace the crank sensor instead of the pick up coil. But check also for input voltage to the crank sensor harness wire. In some cases, the crank sensor magnet probe could be cracked and make sure to check them by removing the sensor for close visual inspection.
