Default Power Steering is a Squealing Banshee

It'* not the pump, it'* not the pulley....we are just back yard mechanics looking for suggestions.

No ground evidence of a leak, the PSF foams when running....any ideas before I haul it to the pro'*?

Love my car BUT, I think it wants me to get a divorce because it'* causing more problems than hanging wallpaper....

Squealing like the belt is slipping ? Does it turn freely when you remove the belt ? Could have a bearing seizing.

Also recently I would have bet there was a bad p/* pump but turned out was really the alternator. Sometimes you need a stethescope to tell.

Alternator is 2 years old...Gawd, I don't even want to go there again.

Pump and pulley were both changed...problem persists.

Everything appears to move freely....wondering if there is a poor seal somewhere putting stress on the pump. Have you ever seen psf go frothy?

Am on 4th or 5th alternator - after 2nd got lifetime warrenty. Is one of the easiest things to change on a N/A Bonne. Why was there a problem ?

Agree froth is usually a sign of air in the p/* system, perhaps you are developing a crack in the return line. That said the systems I've seen with air in the line also exhibit a jerkiness in the steering wheel when turning.

Right. Sounds like air is getting into the system somewheres.

Rabies....perhaps....took out 13 animals in one year commencing with a deer. I think it got a taste for blood at the point....how many people do you know who took a malard out with their car?

Anyway....great info but I am hoping for a few more answers...

How do you bleed the system is there a bleed screw on the rack ? Shouldn't it self gravity bleed ?

Weird thing is the reservoir empties and foams when you start it yet fills back up to the correct level when you shut it off and let the foam settle. The pump is quiet for the first couple seconds of operation until the reservoir empties. The pump really screams when you steer it . Maybe a blocked line ?????

And thanks for all of the troubleshooting....much appreciated!

Sounds like the resovoir has been sucked dry and there is an air pocket, probably in the steering gear. The level is being suscked down (and getting more air) because the air pocket is compressible and power steering fluid isn't (why the pedal goes to the floor if there is air in the brake line).

Am sure there is an answer but not at home so cannot look in a FSM.

Does anyone know how to drain the PS system?
