Default Snow blind GS 97 gs

got to love smart phones have a craigslist app that you put search terms into and it constantly updates throughout the day. woke up the other night and found this beauty. dead trans but good motor. I poppped on it right away 3 hrs after he posted and was the first to respond.

just looking to dump it so it was stupid cheap... the orig owner was a 65 y/o man the guy who has it now only put 6k on it before it took a dump.

got to love rust free cars.

more pics and pics of the trip to get it tomorrow and thurs

the motor and trans will be yanked and the motor i have been building will find its way into the engine bay.
the motor will be
l76 springs
1.84 YT rr and pushrods
slightly opened head ports to match the gasket and smooth some of the casting down
ported lim
gen 3 IC full size
prj rails
shift kit DIY
custom trans pan
SSAC headers
99 + catback
stock Tb for now
99 coolant resivior
false knock dynamat on front and rear knock sensor and trans
alum cradle
outer tie rods
most likely 06 impala ss calipers. and 12 in rotors
rear grand am calipers
Joseph Abboud 6 spoke rims
front and rear stb
depending on what the sway bar looks like the dorman sway be ordered
Tinted windows
"stock" spoiler
tinted headlights and tail lights
12 in sub in the trunk

the only thing i need to buy is a
01+ rear seat so the majority will fold down

I know it is the cursed color but if it lasted 200k on the stock trans I think I will take my chances esp since the car is only just above what the guy would get for scrap. the price was a no brainer

The motor build is all but done just have to put the dang thing back together spring r on rockers r in a box next to the motor and the Lim is partially ported but that is a couple of hrs with a die grinder away from completion. Sc is ported and the nose already has a mps and the sc oil is in the box with the reusable rocker arm bolts. Lol and the prj rails and headers r in the workshop so is the ic. Just got to get it in one big pile lol.

The journey started tues night at 10 pm when i had to work since that is my Friday. I work all night then take the GTO to go get appraised and the insurance people total it out saying it will cost 12k to fix everything which I think is bogus but whatever i am buying it back and making it my own then using the money they give me to save for a rainy day and work on paying down the GTO since i wanna keep the loan to keep increasing the credit score. I get home and the tire on the truck is flat so i change that out with the spare tire I have in the garage and grab another one to toss in the truck to just be on the safe side. I get done with that and the errands i have to run and lay down in bed and try and grab a little bit of sleep but between a call from a buddy and a couple txts and the 2 phone calls from the insurance company I know this is a fruitless endeavor get up and take a shower to wake up and get everything collected and in the truck.

Finally get on the road and go grab the fiancée from the salon and we head out a little after noon from Cheyenne and head to Laramie the first stop on the trip I had made a call and asked a PHD doctor buddy of mine that has a stupid sick collection of awesome GM cars and asked if i could borrow his trailer to get the car and of course he was more then willing to let me borrow it. He is kind of like an adopted grandpa to me, he and his wife have let me crash at their gorgeous house many times and I even did my first motor swap in the 93 regal that I had in their garage. I get there grab the trailer and take off but Amanda is hungry so we make a quick pit stop at subway and grab a sandwich for the road and this is where i notice that the driver rear tire on the trailer is low so luckily before we hop on the interstate we are able to find a gas station that would accommodate the trailer. We get on the road and wouldn’t you know it we hit construction but the first set wasn’t terrible but the second area was horrendous. For those of you that have been through Wyoming on I80 they were working on Elk Mountain. For those of you that haven’t been it is a constant grade of prolly 5% or greater which means you are working to get up it and I think it peaks at somewhere near 10,000 ft elevation. They had the interstate down to 1 lane each way which meant all the big trucks were all grouped together and grunting to make it up. One of the trucks must have been overloaded or something and could only muster 30 mph through the cone zone which was 13+ miles long, needless to say we were not getting off to a real great start but after we get through that it is pretty smooth sailing till we hit carbon county which if you look it up they have been having massive flooding issues. I used to live there and I have never seen so much water or it so high there was places where the rivers were literally no more than 6 ft from the bottom of some of the bridges.

There is only one thing i will say is that some truck drivers are stupidly discourteous or maybe it is the areas i have been living in but if a truck with a trailer is merging in and the left lane is empty u get over to let them in. Anyway between that and the crotch rocket riders it is like WTF. There was this one kid on a lime green ninja 600 that would blow past me doing 90+ then 20 miles down the road you would see him on the side of the road fiddling with something then 10 minutes later he would blow by doing the same thing. I think he did this 3 times before I got off and got gas and never saw him again. Things were pretty uneventful till we hit Kemmerer WY where we pulled over to get a little gas and stretch our legs. We get back on the road and as we are turning to get on the proper turn off to get to Logan we see this guy that could have passed for a man made of leather on the side of the road on his bike shirtless and in shorts, maybe it is just me but I wouldn’t want to risk it but that is me. Things were going good till we hit the canyon up by Bear Lake where we hit traffic and more idiots, I am towing a 16 ft trailer and going the speed limit on this stretch where they have laid down oil and covered it in loose gravel. I don’t know about the rest of you but if you are on a road like that don’t blast around a truck and trailer at full throttle then jerk back into the lane. The idiot didn’t lose control but still a stupid move. After that we ended up around the Bear Lake area which for one is gorgeous, two it is so full it is not even funny back in 2004 when I was with my ex-wife we were able to camp out on the lake bed prolly a good 20 ft or further out from the bank and now it is so full that the edge of the lake is to the edge of the road banks and about 3-5 ft from coming up to where it would be up to the road. there is this little lake community that is around the lake and it looks like the houses that are the closest to the lake would have a flooded basement if the house had a basement. We get through that area then it is into the canyons we go, well we get stuck behind a full cattle truck and he is going anywhere from 20-35 in a 40-55 zone. This goes on for 20 miles or so and there is 2 vehicles between the truck and me at first then when they thought it would be safe they cut the corners and ducked in front of the truck, it was a good thing i was far enough back the truck had to lock them up to avoid making a mess in a the canyon.
We finally get to Logan about 7:30 and get to the house about 8. We find the house or should I say apartment and then realize that the alley where the car was dead ends but there is a field that I could back into and turn around. We get the truck flipped around and get the trailer lined up with the alley so we can drive the car on the trailer. The guy tries to drive it on once but he didn’t have it lined up right so he backs up and tries again but yet still get it. As he is backing it up the trans slips and wont let him go forward. We let it cool off and about 10 mins later we get it started again and get it on the trailer but he is way too close to one side for my comfort so I take the big jack out of the truck that I had brought in case I had a flat on the truck and get the car straightened out on the trailer to my liking and get the nose tucked up to within an inch of the front. We finish strapping it down and it took me a couple times because I am now running on fumes and had been up for about 24 hrs so it took me a couple tries to get the straps right lol. I should describe the guy who sold the car to me lol, he looked and acted like Richard Simmons. He prolly weighed no more than 95 lbs and had that lisp that is really noticeable. I was dirty and didn’t want to sit in the truck covered in grime if I didn’t have to and so I washed up before we left.
The trip to salt lake was only 81 miles and about 20 of it is hard canyon roads. It has a very steep up grade which my truck did not like at all and could only manage about 50 mph with the car on the back. After I get to the top I have to keep it in 3rd to keep the truck from getting away from me and even in 3rd I had to keep on the brakes fairly heavy. I get to the bottom of the canyon and can feel the brakes fading badly so I was at half tank and thought why not grab some gas and let the truck cool off and let the brakes cool off since they were so hot I could smell them. I top off the tank and let the truck cool for about 10 mins and the brakes felt a lot better. We get on I15 and it is pretty smooth sailing at a steady 65+ mph and get into Clint’* house about 11. We look the car over for a bit and hang out for a little while then setup the bed and finally pass out about 1am. I had been up for just about 26 hrs so I was out right away. I wake up 6 hrs later feeling pretty good and have a quick bite to eat and we do the first full daylight walk around and see there is a few places that need a little attn, but for the price I paid I will not complain at all. Upon further inspection it looks like the radio is not working which is not a big deal I will be just adding the sub and the head unit I have in the 99 and then cruise craigslist for a set of infinity speakers to replace the stockers. The other thing is the sunroof that is in the car is an aftermarket setup and has a 4 button operation vs the stock window switch type. Then after we looked it over we got the pulley off his gen V using the puller that I brought with me. After that we sat around and chatted for a little while then we thought about going to the Mormon tabernacle but we decided to just get on the road and get back home. We make it to Evanston and the truck is not super happy and was needing gas so we swing in get gas and I check the fluids and the coolant is low yet again and the oil is about ½ quart low so I swing into the walmart and let the truck cool because we have a lot of long fairly substantial climbs ahead of us. We top off the fluids and get back on the road, everything is going great till we hit little America and I notice one of the tires on the trailer is a little low so we air up and as we are leaving we see a new Regal T. I have to say I am not a fan but who knows maybe it will grow on me
After the little America stop it is pretty smooth sailing and fairly flat so I was making good time I was able to do 75ish which was pretty much flow of traffic unlike back closer to home where the flow is closer to 85. I get another 150 miles on the tank and grab some gas. This is a shot I took just off hand and thought it was a pretty killer shot with all the cool clouds in the background. I only took the shot because there was a camper infront of me filling up so I had a little time to kill waiting on him. Finally got filled and got back on the road and the clouds and sky was cool to watch as it turned from this to this then to some severe weather just to the south along the Colorado border but amanda didn’t get a good shot of it but it was a massive cell like you see on those storm chasers shows. We skirted just north of the storm so we didn’t hit any super bad storms but we did get some light showers but nothing crazy. Then we finally got to the last big pull before home and I put my foot in my mouth and said we are on the down hill slope now but what would you know about a 1/3 to 1/2 the way up the truck starts acting a little funny and notice the temp gauge higher then what it had been before so I shut the truck down and pull it off to the side of the interstate and pop the hood. There was a stream of coolant /steam shooting out of the driverside of the radiator just under the top radiator hose. Sooner or later it calmed down and I was able to look and pull the cap off and long story short there was very little good coolant it was all oil tinged diluted looking tang. The truck had the headgaskets replaced at a dealer before I got it so I am assuming they didn’t flush the coolant completely. Well I call the buddy that I borrowed the trailer from and he showed up in the corvette and had a trunk full of 2 ilters and milk jugs full of water. We top off the radiator and get to the top with him trailing to make sure we made it since it is downhill from the top of the pass. We get to the top and the truck was a little warm so I pop the cap and a lot of the coolant hissed out but I didn’t care I took a bottle of the cold water and topped it off and the temp dropped to about 150 so I knew I was good for a while and head out. It held till we got home and got the trailer parked. I dug into the radiator and after it was removed I found that there were 2 cracks that totaled over 3 inches long. I decided that instead of just replacing the stock radiator why not upgrade to a dual core just incase this happened again. So the truck is swapped out and I will be running the cleaner through today and getting all that oil residue out and drain the block again and get the heater core all cleaned out so I can get good clean coolant in the system and not have oil tainted coolant.
This is the donor going in

Cant wait to have this all back together and have it on the road

Little update have been sidetracked trying to fix the blazer but I have found a set of infinity kappa speakers for cheap that fit the silverado and the regals now I will have 2 way speakers up front and 3 way 6x9s in the back as well as the sub then I will use the monsoon amp from the 99 to power the new speakers. This car is coming together quickly and cheaply.
