Default tranny pics

i just got my car back from the tranny shop. i kept my parts. he said that it was a bunch of little things.

a whole box full of parts.

i dont remember what he called this. but it had fluid in it and there wasnt supposed to be any in there. it went to the vacuum regulator i think.

fluid=bad

the pin holding my diff together had moved and was being chewed up by my gears. he said it woulda lasted another month or so, then the all hell woulda broken loose. also woulda costed more like $2500 than the $1170 that i paid.

note the pin sticking out the right side.

dont know the name

?

dont kno what this is, but he said that the gasket around it was pretty hard.

ya, im dumb

smart ppl chime in.

nasty notches

clutches

battle scars

dont look too bad

vacuum regulator, i think.

it shifts much better and firmer. me likey

Did you put in any upgraded parts? I've seen recommendations to do that when you get a re-build. I'm saying this without knowing if you can even get upgraded parts for our trans.

Ultimately, that cheap-o shift modulator was probably the bulk of your 'felt' symptoms, but the diff pin would have been the ultimate demise. Looks like the retaining roll-pin broke on one end and allowed it to 'walk' out. Sticking out that far, your diff housing was the only thing keeping it in. I sure hope he replaced that housing, as that pin probably machined the hell out of the inside of it.

My pin broke in half, and the pinned half stayed in. That half pin machined a groove in the diff housing from the inside out until it broke off completely.

Yours is probably really thinned down and weakened, and keep in mind there'* a trans mount RIGHT next to it.

In addition, all the little flakes and particles from that damage will clog up the tiny core in your radiator for the trans. We bypassed mine altogether for that reason.

That trans cooling core in the radiator is really just two pipes. One stuck inside the other, and the fluid runs between the outer wall of the inner pipe and the inner wall of the outer pipe. If it'* restricted, your flow is decreased and your pump is overworked. Bypass and go to an external cooler to be safe. The Zilla'* trans was so bad, we ditched the OEM trans cooler, bypassed the radiator, and ditched the aftermarket cooler I'd added. Got a single monster on there now.

Looking at all that carnage has me real interested in getting mine looked at, as I have over 155,000 on mine and it probably wouldn't survive if I had to put $3000+ into it after a total trans failure. A rebuild with shift kit and stronger torque converter would be much more sensible.

I'll look into it next spring, I guess.

I've not seen a TC fail on this forum yet. Don't upgrade that if you don't have to (too late for you). As far as upgraded parts are concerned, I can't stress this enough:

There IS. Every part the 4T65 has available upgraded aftermarket is available for the 4T60. Every single part. Has been for years. You have to find a builder that knows where to find it, but it'* ALL out there.

Even my Diff was custom built out of all beefier hard parts, including the pin.

Thanks for the input Will. I was pretty sure I had read that here before. I printed this thread out, so I would have it for future reference...
