The factory 6x9s are alright, but they are limited as too how much sound they can really produce, not bad for component audio though.
Lots of information in the Audo forum.

Welcome.
Boy have YOU come to the right place!!!! Too bad you didn't find us sooner. There are many mods for our cars.A simple CAI is a big difference maker in the performance also. It makes a wonderful difference in the whine from the supercharger too!!!

Welcome and enjoy. The mod bug will get a hold of you by spring. (it'* currently got it'* teeth in me)
I call my 97 SSEi a grannymobile and grocery getter, let them say what they want. It is far more comfortable, powerful and roomy than any Honda, Toyota or Focus/Neon.
Once your friends get a ride and see the seat controls and dash they'll be asking to come back all the time.
PS.. Did we say enjoy the power?
At the moment the only thing I've done to boost horsepower is "gut the airbox", this is merely removing the excess plastic baffles from the factory air box. OMG talk about a difference in power

as for modding, i'm not really sure......the only thing i've done to it was that it used to have a cassette radio, then we took that out and put in a factory cd player hu, with the equalizer......i wanted to add some subs, but i kinda scratched that idea..
subs are nice
i really want to add a fm modulator, cuz my fm transmitter sucks, and then buy a rather large mp3 player, so i can play my mp3 player through the stereo
You may want to look into a new HU. This would allow you to connect your MP3 player directly to the HU and not lose quality like you will by broadcasting it over a FM station.
i've also thought about some new 6x9'*, maybe to get a little more bass, even though the stock system still has quite a bit of punch
you have a lot of choices there. With the size of the rear deck, you can do a LOT of different things.
