I've written a Matlab program that will make that first pic. What it does is scan a picture, looking for color change from pixel to pixel. The greater the change, the darker the resulting pixel, creating that etched or raised look.

we have alot of bluestone around these parts and i've quarried alittle for xtra cash and was thinking that first pic would be cool etched in a square of it. And J'* a programmer.i'm humbled.love computers dont understand them a bit.
I use to sell large chunks of rough bluestone to a yard with a computer guided water jet etching machine that can copy photos into stone and ya got me thinking it would rock to have a large GXP stone in my patio

BLUESTONE is a very compact slate, pale blue in color, used alot in building face around these parts but soft enuff to waterjet etch instead of sandblast, doesnt work good on headstones tho, lettering wears over the years
