12 point tend to round things off. i would choose 6 if i had to pick one. its nice to have both though because once they are rounded off you can hammer a 12p socket on the round nut and have more gripping power to get it loose

6 point sockets don't work well on 12 point objects. Especially aircraft grade hardware. Get both. Done.

I would order 12 point for combination wrenches. I bought a 12 point matco set many years ago and love them mostly because they have an open end that grabs on 4 areas of the fastener. Sometimes you can only get the open end on a fastener. If you need a 6 point wrench usually you can use a 6 point socket to accomplish removal. Most of my sockets are 6 point. I have needed 12 point sockets a few times so later you could pick up a set of those. I would not waste extra money on tool truck sockets even with 50% off. Ratchets are another thing that you can get soaked on. Later when your making a comfortable living you can always do some upgrading with tools. The tool truck salesmen love to get you up on the truck where you can really spend alot more than you need to.

I would get 12 point for the 1/4" and 3/8" drive stuff, and 6 point for the 1/2" drive.

I actually get my tools directly from snap on. from what my snap on agent told me I get my tools cheaper than what the snap on truck pays for "cost".

6pts don't work very well on 12pts. Go with 12pts for now. At least they are backwards compatible with 6 pts, but you have to be careful with those. Sometimes a metric 12pt will work better on a SAE fitting and vice versa.
