I have a '90 sse. I need to put on a balancer and I am getting conflicting info between all data and mitchell'* One says it'* a matter of taking off the bolt and removing while one says somthing about a slide tool for the sensor and resetting the sensor and if you touch the inside splines with the slide tool, you need anothe balancer. Any comments would be appreciated.

The balancer is held in place by the bolt, however it'* also a press fit onto the crank and therefore must be pulled off. This can be done with a puller that you can usually rent from the local parts stores. Only trick is that the bolts from the puller into the balancer are 80+mm m6x 1.0 (IIRC) and you will rarely find them with a puller kit.

I found my bolts at Napa in the bolt drawers, they seem to be semi uncommon due to the small diameter and long length.

Once the balancer is off, in your year there is a way to adjust the sensor. I would suggest searching here on how to set it, my understanding is you have some wiggle room and overall it is not a tough or hard procedure to get it lined up.

The balancer on a 1990 doesn't require a puller like the later models do. At worst you may have to tap it with a mallet to release it from the crank snout.
To answer the question, it is pretty easy to change one. The most difficult part is loosening the center bolt. The easiest way is with a pneumatic impact ratchet wrench.
The sensor shouldn't need to be adjusted, but if it does, it is a simple matter of setting it so it doesn't hit the teeth on the balancer.

Thanks everyone! finnaly got the bolt off. 2 days later! Now, the pulley pulls off but it wont come off because it is blocked by the oil filter housing about 1 inch. Even if I wanted to take the housing off, I cant get to the bolts until the pulley is off. Am I missing somthing here? The three manuals I have say nothing about touching the oil filter housing. Please help fast!

Hey thanks, after 2 days of trying the bolt is off but the oil filter housing is keeping the pulley from coming off and none of the 3 manuals say anything about having to touch the housing. Even if I wanted to take the housing off, I cant get to the bolts until the balancer comes off. Am I missing somthing?

I don't understand how that is possible because the pulley would have to slide past it upon installation. Either your oil filter housing is bent or your pulley magically swelled an inch. A picture of the problem would help.
My pulley came off without the need to remove the oil filter.

Are you taking it out through the passenger wheel well? I've completed the same thing with my 1990 bonne. Was very straight forward job no problems.

ya, wow! I finally got the filter housing off and everything went on and bolted back. Just a hassel. Drain oil, take off oil lines from housing, new gasket, more beer etc. thanks for every ones help!

I'd still like to see a picture of that. I'm curious why yours was so difficult and everyone else'* was so easy.
