Default Auxiliary iPod Dock in stock Delco HU!?!? YES!

A continuation of this thread: http://www.bonnevilleclub.com/forum/...ic.php?t=62128

As usual I post all my finished projects in Your Ride, cause damit that'* where people look, and I feel it'* appropriate, I'll add some more appropriate pics tomorrow if it'* nice out as well.

So this all started with me sitting around bored at the beginning of school this year, and I was quite desperate to have an aux input on my stereo, but I HATE the look of aftermarket HUs, just not right. So I set out to get an aux input on my stock stereo, without any physical mods, and with complete determination, no matter what; I was getting an input!

This thread will be light on details, I'll be putting together an actual documented guide later on my own site.

Here'* the gist, I analyzed the interface busses between the CD unit and motherboard of the HU, using equipment in my labs to map the interface pinouts and such. After doing that I acquried a 4 pole double through high quality relay to perform the switching of the line level interconnects in the stereo itself. Also I ordered a special iPod interface cable with dock connector which allowed firewire and line out connection.

I modified the cable to integrate it into the car'* 12V ignition wire to allow charging of the iPod whenever the car is on!!!11 (This is my favourite part!!)

I'm going to be integrating a second switch hidden in my console right beside (and matching) my sub control switch tomorrow, just didn't have time today.

Now pics:
The interface bus, and the Omron relay.

Bus output on the CD unit:

Bus input on the motherboard:

Soldering to the relay:

Relay all soldered up, and heatshrinked and getting installed into the stereo itself:

The mass of connections that needed to be made to the wiring harness:

The relay grounded to the HU chasis:

Wiring getting installed and tested:

Final test & mockup:

Everything turned on and kicking ***!:

Other project notes:
I tinted the screen of my iPod to match the stereo and dash lighting perfectly.
I repaired the light on the HU, it hasn't been working for the past 3 years.

Better pics of everything to come tomorrow.

Also crappy videos taken with my RAZR tomorrow to prove functionality!

Result notes:
The quality is rediculous, with the subs tuned and everything rockn' it'* _very_ good, I went for a drive for a while tonight just to listen to stuff!

Very, very nice install. I was thinking about doing the same thing with my Creative Zen Vision:M, but I also had this idea of making kind of a makeshift dock in the ashtray, along with a jack for my phone, as it just happens to fit perfectly snug with my mp3 player. I know you're trying for the stock look, but did you consider the ashtray?

Excellent work Brad! Wow. I'd really like to hear it when you're in town.

Maybe another Aurora project for next summer?

I defanitely did consider it, but after thinking about it, it was very impractical for me, the way the pod sits now, it'* just above the seat controls, and pretty much where your hand rests naturally so it'* very easy to control.

Jim: I'm here until Monday if you're driving by!
