How to change serpentine belt?
Hi all,
I am planning to replace my serpentine belt on my 96 Bonne SE. Is there anything i particular that I need to do? Or any special tools? How does the belt tensioner work?
Thanks

I believe I used an 18mm socket with my breaker bar to hold back the belt tensioner. As for HOW the belt tensioner works, you'll have to wait for one of the Gearheads here can explain it to you. But BEFORE you remove the belt from your car, you might want to LOOK to see how it wraps around the various pulleys. Also there should be a diagram somewhere under your hood to show how the belt is installed. The ONLY problem you might have is getting the old belt off and the new belt on the car. My car(with the Series I engine) does not have any obstructions removing/installing the serpentine belt. But your car, with a Series II engine, has a bolt around the engine mount that might have to be loosened. Again, one of the Gearheads here can explain this better for you. Good Luck.

You are going to have to take off part of the motor mount. Its not to bad though.
I have some pic on my cardomain page if it helps.

To use the belt tensioner just find the correct size socket put it on the bolt on the pulley and push towards the back of the car. The tensioner pulley will move to the back and down and the belt will just slip off.

To keep you from standing for three hours wonderin how to get that %$#### thin around that mount, back off the lower mount bolt just enough for the spacer to drop away andfeed the belt through. Replace the spacer and bolt, then route the belt according to your application.
