Default aztek starting issues

Got this PM from Jsteve34;

Last night I bought a 2001 Pontiac Aztek It ran great and I got a good deal on it. I drove it home and parked it came out the next morning to move it and I realized I left one of the doors open slightly (all interior lights off didnt drain battery), I turned the key over and everything still came on but when I went to start it the dash goes blank and nothing happens. I can hear the relays under the center console and both are clicking nice, the starter relay under the hood 58 is not doing anything when I attempt to start it. According to your post I checked for 12v on v3 and v1 and that was both good and it appeared that both w1 and w3 had a constant ground. This doesn't make sense however since I can jump it both at the relay and the starter and it fires right up. I could have been looking at the relay wrong but v3 and v1 are facing the passenger side and w1 and w3 are facing the driver side with w1 and v3 facing the firewall? Ive also checked under hood 19 27 40 and 48 fuses and they are all good along with 42 under the center console. There is no security light that comes on either.

referring to diagram here, you shouldnt get ground on w1, try testing it with a test light, the clip connected to battery pos it shouldnt light until the key is turned. if it does you have a short the chassis in that line

Got the issue figured out, there was a short in the starter wire that comes out of the ignition cylinder. I took the column cover off wiggled those wires around and it fired right up.
