I have a 99 grand am se 2.4l twin cam and I think either my clutch pack or torque converter just went out on me today. Anyone know what model trans I have?, and how much will this cost me?. Thanks.

You either have a 4T40E or 4T45E tranny.....

What makes you think this?

Have you scanned it for Transmission codes?

Have you checked fluid level? Special procedure since it has no dipstick....

no I haven't scanned for codes it just happened to me going to work. you're right on no dipstick and haven't checked it. The reason I think it'* mainly the torque converter is, I was driving along and out of nowhere the motor started acting like a jack hammer or the motor was about to break off the mounts. I puled over to the side of the highway and as soon I got about 10mph the motor shut off. I started it back up and at idle again jack hammer, put it in gear then shuts off again. So I then gave a little gas then slammed it into drive the rpm went to 5500, still feeling like a jack hammer slowly moving. I got it back up to highway speed and then I could smell clutch burning but it shifts fine. At about 60 mph steady the rpm gauge bounces from 1800-2300 rpm and it sounds like a wiffle ball. so it'* making me believe it'* torque converter but I don't know.

The 4T40/45E'* don't have a dipstick..........

In some cases though, some techs don't know how to check it......

On the passenger side, where your axle comes out(facing it), to the right and about 2-3" above the ridge of the transmission pan, you will see an 11 mm bolt.......get the engine to normal operating temp by driving it(this gets the tranny fluid to operating temp)......stop on a level ground......shift through all the gears, and then put in park, LEAVE VEHICLE RUNNING, apply e-brake, open hood......then have a pan and an 11 mm socket setup handy.......crawl under the car.....BE VERY CAREFUL......YOU WILL BE NEAR ROTATING PARTS, AND A HOT EXHAUST PIPE......slowly remove the 11 mm bolt(have pan positioned under the bolt in case fluid comes out).....if fluid comes out, it is overfilled......let it come out until it dribbles.....if nothing comes out, fluid level should be just at the bottom of the hole(this is why vehicle must be running AND on level ground).....can look in hole with mirror and light or bend a wire at a rt angle, insert and remove to see if fluid is on it......if low, on the driver'* side on top of the tranny is a red or black round fill cap....remove....insert funnel ......and add tranny fluid in SMALL increments and watch to see if fluid comes out the hole(use small increments cause it takes awhile for the fluid to travel towards the hole....when fluid starts to dribble out, stop filling....try to catch a sample of fluid....if burnt/dark, could need a tranny service......insert plug and you are done.....I REPEAT....BE CAREFUL OF MOVING PARTS AND A HOT EXHAUST!!!!!
