Default Fuel pump

Does anyone know how to tell if a fuel pump is going out and if so can a 2002 malibu fuel pump work on a 98 pontiac grand prix both have same 3.1 engine thks

Check fuel pressure to see if the pump is good or not. From what I can see in looking up the fuel pumps for both vehicles they are not interchangeable. They are different in height, and have different electrical and fuel connectors.

I would never put a 14 year old f/p into another vehicle....especially since the only access is to drop the tank....

I totally agree with the esteemed Tech II....If you go to the trouble of dropping the tank you had better put a NEW pump in there. Stay away from Airtex or Bosch. Carter and AC Delco have served me well. I have had to change fuel pumps on every big FWD GM car I've had (2 Bonnevilles and 2 Olds Eighty Eights) so I speak from experience.
